Box Score New York, NY --- Junior
Dmitry Prokofyev scored the game-winner in the 86th minute to propel the #2 seeded Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team, 1-0, over the #3 seeded Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY) in the semifinals of the 2012 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Applebee's Men's Soccer Championships held at Randall's Island Field #10 on Saturday night.
“I give credit to a very resilient CCNY team,” said head coach
Rawle Hensford. “We dominated play and had more opportunities; however, they fought to the end. Sometimes in soccer you can dominate play and be on the wrong end of a result. That was not the case tonight and we finally caught a break late from one of our many chances. This was a well deserved victory and we are looking forward to the support of the BC community in the final.”
The Bulldogs controlled the first half outshooting the Beavers 13-5 in the period, while also holding a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Despite being outplayed, CCNY had the first chance to get on the scoreboard early in the match.
Coming in the 12th minute of play, CCNY's Samuel Nkama rifled a shot that hit off of the crossbar. The Beavers' Felix Dalgo then attempted to score off the rebound opportunity; however Brooklyn keeper, junior
Stamatis Boundouris was there to make the save. Following a corner kick opportunity for CCNY, Matthew Mbamelu's header shot was also stopped by Boundouris.
Not to be outdone by his counterpart, CCNY's net minder, Tayfun Kucuk, made seven saves in the opening half to help keep the game scoreless.
With neither offense able to score, the game headed into the intermission break in a 0-0 tie.
Similar to the first half, the BC offense would continue to push the tempo in the second period, as the Bulldogs once again outshot the Beavers by a 13-5 margin in the stanza.
Brooklyn would finally breakthrough in the 86th minute, when Prokofyev beat Kucuk from the left to score the lone goal of the game, punching the Bulldogs' ticket to the championship final.
For the game, Brooklyn outshot CCNY, 26-10, and held the corner kick edge, 10-5.
Kucuk played all 90 minutes in net, allowing one goal and registering nine saves. Boundouris also played all 90 minutes in goal, recording five saves on the night en route to the shutout victory, his second of the CUNYAC Championships.
The win extends Brooklyn's win streak to eight in a row, as the Bulldogs conclude the month of October with a perfect 8-0 record. The Bulldogs have also posted five straight shutouts.
BC (13-4-2) will now play in the championship final for the first time in school history. The Bulldogs will go up against top seeded Baruch College next Saturday, November 3rd at 7:00 pm at Randall's Island Field #10. The winner will receive the CUNYAC's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Tournament. The Bearcats defeated #5 seed College of Staten Island, 3-0, in their semifinal match.
Baruch defeated Brooklyn in their regular season match up, 2-1, back on September 29th, at Metropolitan Oval in Maspeth, NY. Since that loss, the Bulldogs have rattled off eight straight victories.
