Brooklyn, NY --- In its 2012 season opener, the Brooklyn College Men's Tennis team dropped a non-conference match against the Panthers of Purchase College, 9-0, this afternoon at the Roosevelt Courts on the campus of Brooklyn College.
With the loss, the Bulldogs start the season at 0-1, while the Panthers improve to 3-1 overall on the year.
Purchase took the early advantage by sweeping doubles play to go up 3-0.
The visitors would use their momentum from doubles and continue to dominate singles action by taking all six flights en route to its 9-0 win.
“This was a rough loss for us,” said head coach
Ahmad Odetalla. “We dug ourselves into a hole in doubles and couldn't find a way to recover.”
Freshman
Robin Varughese, making his collegiate debut for BC, won the first set of his #3 singles match, 6-2, coming against Ben Ekis. However, Ekis would battle back in the second set to claim a 6-4 win and force a deciding super set tiebreaker. In the end, Ekis would outlast Varughese for the 10-6 win to take the tiebreaker and the match.
“I think Robin played well today,” said Odetalla. “Although he lost, he did a great job extending his match.”
Sophomores
Cheyne Tribbey and
Deshi Wu also suffered tough luck losses, as Tribbey dropped his #5 singles match, 7-5, 6-0, while Wu fell 6-4, 7-5 at #6 singles.
Brooklyn will return to the courts this Saturday, March 17th, as the Bulldogs will host Bard College in a non-conference match. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 pm at the Roosevelt Courts.
