Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Tennis team picked up its first win of the 2012 season earlier today, as the Bulldogs downed the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College, 8-1, in a non-conference match at the Roosevelt Courts.
With the win, BC moves to 1-3 overall on the young season; while Albertus Magnus drops to 0-1 overall.
“This was an important win for us in the sense that it gets the ball rolling,” said head coach
Ahmad Odetalla. “Hopefully, we can build on this and continue to move forward.”
The Bulldogs would take the early 2-1 advantage after doubles play, as the team of
Anthony Chan and
Deshi Wu defeated the pairing of Heath Henderson and Elvis Santana, 8-0, at #2 doubles; while the tandem of
Robin Varughese and
Anthony Sideris took a similar 8-0 win at #3 doubles against Mark Ferraro and Troy Owens.
Brooklyn would continue to build on its lead in singles play, as the Bulldogs swept all six flights to go onto their 8-1 victory.
Varughese, Wu and Sideris all took home 6-0, 6-0 wins at #3, #5 and #6 singles, respectively; while
Marvin Gill won 6-3, 6-0 at #4 singles. For Varughese and Gill, the wins marked their first collegiate singles victories.
Matthew Micharlsen brought home a 6-4, 6-1 win at #1 singles, while Chan played the match of the day, earning a hard fought 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory at #2 singles over his opponent Tim Gabbard.
Brooklyn returns to action on Sunday, March 25th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Staten Island, NY to take conference rival the College of Staten Island. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start time.
