Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss to the Hawks of Hunter College in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match earlier today at the Roosevelt Courts on the BC campus.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 1-5 overall on the season and 0-3 in CUNYAC play; while the Hawks remain unbeaten at 6-0 overall on the year and 4-0 in the conference.
Due to Hunter only have five players; the Hawks were forced to forfeit their #3 doubles and #6 singles flights.
Entering the match down 0-2, Hunter would quickly even the match by taking the #1 and #2 doubles spots. The Hawks tandem of Damen Ellingson and Bob Frischling-Sosma outlasted the Bulldog duo of
Robin Varughese and
Anthony Sideris at #2 doubles by a score of 8-6 in a hard fought battle.
With the match tied a 2-2, the Hawks would continue to take control of the match by coming out victorious in the five singles matches.
Making his BC debut at the #3 singles position, sophomore
Michael Martone was edged out by Frischling-Sosma, 7-5, 6-3. Classmate
Deshi Wu also had a tough luck loss at #5 singles, falling to Stanislav Tsoy, 6-4, 6-4.
“We just couldn't get it together mentally today,” said head coach
Ahmad Odetalla. “We must put up better efforts on a consistent basis if we are going to have any chance to beat quality teams like Hunter.”
Brooklyn will be back in action on Tuesday, April 3rd, as the Bulldogs will play host to CUNYAC rival York College. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start at the Roosevelt Courts.
