Newark, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Men's Tennis team dropped a hard-fought non-conference match earlier today in Newark, NJ, as the Bulldogs came out on the short end of a 5-4 decision to the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark at the Golden Dome Courts.
With the loss, BC falls to 1-10 overall on the season; while Rutgers-Newark improves to 2-8 overall on the year.
The Scarlet Raiders would jump out to an early 2-1 advantage, after taking the #1 and #2 doubles flights. The Rutgers-Newark duo of Gafar Ayinde and William Cheung cruised past the Brooklyn pairing of
Matthew Micharlsen and
Yeshen Shang, 8-1; while the Scarlet Raiders tandem of Derence Tejero and Rajan Mandania got the better of the Bulldogs team of
Michael Martone and
Robin Varughese, 8-6.
BC's
Deshi Wu and
Mubashir Shabil Billah defeated Rutgers-Newark's Austin Gilker and Jose Polanco, 8-1.
The results from doubles play would end up making the difference in the win for the Scarlet Raiders, as the teams split the six singles matches to take the eventual 5-4 match win.
Brooklyn took the #1, #2 and #6 singles flights, while Rutgers-Newark took the #3, #4 and #5 singles flights.
Micharlsen and Martone each battled in their matches to take three-set victories.
After dropping the his first set 6-4, Micharlsen gutted out wins in the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-4, to earn the come-from-behind victory at #1 singles.
Similarly, Martone lost his first set 6-3, before coming back to take the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4, to pick up the win at #2 singles.
Billah took home the final win of the day for BC, taking #6 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Brooklyn returns to action on Tuesday, April 17th, as the Bulldogs will play host to the Lightning of Lehman College in a key City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 pm at the Roosevelt Courts.
