Box Score Brooklyn, NY---Brooklyn College and City College of New York finished tied in the CUNYAC regular season standings with a 5-2-1 record, played to a 1-1 tie during the regular season, and then played 110 minutes in tonight's CUNYAC Semifinal, tying once again to a score of 1-1. In tournament play, a tie is decided by penalty kicks, and the Bulldogs would fall in heartbreaking fashion, 4-3, with a chance to tie on the final kick sailing over the goal, giving the Beavers the win and a chance to meet Baruch next Saturday, at Brooklyn College in the Championship Final.
Brooklyn would get on the board first, in the game's 20th minute, as
Marco Thimm-Kaiser would score on assist from
Taras Frankivskyy and
Oleg Tykhonravov.
CCNY would soon tie during the 28th minute, as Anthony Scarallo's strong throw-in made it all the way to the opposite side of the net, where Gregory Betty would head it in to knot the scoring at one a piece.
That would wrap up the goal count for the half, and in fact the remainder of the game. At the intermission, Brooklyn led 10-6 in shots, and 3-2 in shots on goal.
During the second half of play, Brooklyn seemed highly energized and dominate much of the tempo and possession of the ball, keeping pressure on CCNY and controlling the ball throughout, but with each scoring attempt, CCNY did their best to combat BC and the Bulldogs failed to convert.
The Bulldogs best chance came on a free kick from
Taras Frankivskyy, who launched a shot just high, hitting the crossbar for the near goal.
Brooklyn outshot City 17-3 during the period, with a 6-1 shot on goal advantage but could not get that elusive go-ahead score..
Over the two 10-minute overtime periods, neither CCNY or Brooklyn seemed to be able to put together any legitimate scoring attempts, and the game went into a penalty kick round to decide the winner.
In the penalty kick round, CCNY's Lukasz Zalewski kicked first and put it past BC keeper
Kamil Ostrowski to put CCNY up 1-0.
Brooklyn's
Dmitry Prokofyev was up next and put his shot in with ease by City College goalie Maxwell Berkow.
The Beaver's Edwards Ames missed his kick high off the crossbar, opening the door for Brooklyn to take a lead, which they did when
Marco Thimm-Kaiser gently lofted a shot past Berkow for the 2-1 advantage.
CCNY would not fold under the pressure as Allin Sandru, Nicolas Corrao and Samuel Nkama would each go on to make their shots, while only
Edison Nurcellari could convert for BC, as
Peter Vavalle and
Kenny Benitez could not.
With the victory , City, who improves to 7-8-3 on the season, will go on to battle Baruch on Saturday at 4:30 pm, at Brooklyn College for the CUNYAC title, while Brooklyn, now 10-6-2, will hope to earn their second consecutive ECAC Metro Tournament berth.
"We were a bit unfortunate tonight," said BC Head Coach
Rawle Hensford. "We dominated play, but were unable to get the go-ahead goal. We credit CCNY as they found a way to keep us off the board and held their nerves in penalty kicks."
Hensford, the 2012 CUNYAC Coach of the Year, has now led the resurgent Brooklyn College men's soccer team to two straight winning seasons and a 3-2 record in CUNYAC Tournament play over those two seasons.
Brooklyn soccer fans will have a chance to cheer on the women, as they look to avenge the men's team's loss on Wednesday, when they battle the Beavers in a CUNYAC Women's Semifinal matchup beginning at 6:30 at Brooklyn College Field.
