In the second semifinal of the 2014 CUNYAC/Brine Tournament, the #2 Brooklyn Bulldogs took on the #6 Hunter Hawks. Brooklyn and Hunter last faced off in the 2012 Quarterfinals with the Bulldogs advancing 2-0. The game would be dominated by the hosting Bulldogs and would result in another 2-0 victory."I am really happy with the win," said Brooklyn Head Coach Rawle Hensford. "This is the mental toughness you need in these games. We are looking forward to being back in the final and we're going to have a good week of practice."
Brooklyn had control of the ball for much of the first half and barely let Hutner cross midfield. Hunter's only offense came just two minutes into the game as Hunter's Fausto Perez took a deep shot on goal that was easily saved by Ilya Keygen. Brooklyn was able to break through in the 14th minute of play, Fernand Grisales dribbled down the side of the field before crossing it to Gabriel Isaksen for the goal and a 1-0 lead over the Hawks. The 26th minute saw a weak shot on goal by Sirojiddin Shamsiev. In the 33rd minute, a free kick was launched by Kenny Benitez right at the goal but Hunter's Zachary Metz was able to save the Hawks from a multi-goal deficit.
Hunter came out energetic in the second half but after a few minutes, Brooklyn would begin consistently controlling the ball again. In the 53rd minute, Andres Pertuz send a shot that was saved by Metz but the Bulldogs would break through a few minutes later in the 61st minute. At that point, Benitez and Pertuz passed the ball back and forth downfield until Benitez found Igor Pacca to expand the lead to 2-0. It looked like Hunter would halve the lead with a shot by Kamal Chherti in the 69th minute that was just a little high. A couple of minutes later, the Hawks' Perez took another shot on goal that was saved to preserve the shutout. In the 87th minute, Isaksen had just the goalie left to beat but a gutsy play by Metz kept the game at 2-0 and that is where it would end.
With the victory, Brooklyn earned their spot in the CUNYAC/Brine Championship Final on November 8 at 4:30pm. Â That game will be played at Brooklyn College Field. Â Tickets are free and can be obtained by clicking here.
