Men’s Soccer Falls in CUNYAC Final, 1-0

Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team saw its 2014 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championships run end in the final on Saturday afternoon, as the #2 seeded Bulldogs came up just short, 1-0, against the #4 seeded Bearcats of Baruch College.

With the win, Baruch improves to 12-5-2 overall on the season and will now advance to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships, earning the CUNYAC's automatic bid into the national tournament. The win also gives the Bearcats its third straight conference championship.

Brooklyn drops to 9-9-1 overall on the year and finishes as the CUNYAC runner-up for the second time in three years. The Bulldogs fell to Baruch, 4-2, in the 2012 final.

The Bearcats would strike early in the game, as Danny Goldberg sent the ball into the box off of a free kick following a Brooklyn foul. Rashid Allah Morad would head Goldberg's ball into the front of the goal, where Charles McConnell would head the ball into the bottom left corner of the net and past keeper to put Baruch up 1-0 in the 11th minute.

The Bearcats would hold onto its 1-0 advantage for the rest of the half, as Baruch would control the tempo holding Brooklyn without a shot in the opening period.

The second half would see Brooklyn begin to push the offensive temp and outshoot Baruch, 5-4, but would be unable to find the equalizer. The Bulldogs would have a golden opportunity to tie the game following a red card on Baruch's keeper, Peter DiBona in the 55th minute, which gave Brooklyn a man-up advantage the rest of the way; however, the Bearcats would clamp down on defense and make their goal advantage stand on their way to their third straight title.

Ilya Keygen played all 90 minutes in goal for Brooklyn, allowing one goal and making three saves. DiBona played the first 54:46 before being sent off, while Helder Correia played the final 35:14 and made a save to secure the shutout.

For the game, Baruch outshot Brooklyn 11-5 and also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"We knew that Baruch would look to capitalize on dead ball situations," said head coach Rawle Hensford. "We are very disappointed in conceding the goal in the way that we did and not be able to level the score. Nevertheless, I'd like to congratulate Baruch and thank all of our players, especially our seniors, for their hard work and dedication over the course of the season."

The Bulldogs will now await a possible selection into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Men's Soccer Championships. Selections will be announced on Monday.
