Men's Tennis Advances To CUNYAC Semis With 5-0 Win Over John Jay

Box Score

Brookyn, NY---The #3 seeded Brooklyn College Men's Tennis Team advanced to the semifinal round of the City University of New York Athletic Conference Championships on Friday as they defeated the #6 seed, John Jay, 5-0.  The Bulldogs will play the #2 seed, Hunter College, on Sunday at Queens College at 3 pm, with the winner of that match headed to the final on Thursday, May 1st.

With today's win, BC ups their overall season record to 7-6 while the Bloodhounds fall to 3-12 on the year.

Brooklyn started strong, taking all three doubles matches, but not without a fight, as the #1 match saw the duo of Elliot Haddad and Charles Stevens come back from a 3-1 deficit to take an 8-6 decision and give their team a 3-0 advantage going into singles play.

The Bulldogs had an easier time in the #2 and #3 matches, winning each by an 8-2 score. In the #2 match, Brooklyn's Stanley Purcell and Robin Varughese got by the John Jay duo of Greg Gon and Frantisek Demek, while Marvin Gill and Deshi Wu made quick work of Zaq Kimpolo and Marco Guzman in their third doubles match.

In singles play, Trevaughn Daley and Brandon Green made quick work of Kimpolo and Guzman, to clinch the 5-0 victory for the Bulldogs.  Daley breezed by Kimpolo, 6-0, 6-0 in #6 singles, while Green won 6-1, 6-0 over Green.  In CUNYAC Championship play, once a team reaches five matches won, the remaining matches are halted and not played out to their conclusion, leaving today's #1 through #4 matches undecided.

"The first doubles match was such an exciting back-and-forth match that I sure was glad swung our way," said Head Coach Ahmad Odetalla after his team's quarterfinal victory. "John Jay is a pretty good team, so it was important for us to take command of the match after doubles, and it made it easier for us to get through singles."

The win marks the first time the Bulldogs will advance to the semifinal round since the 2007 season. During that season, BC advanced to the CUNYAC final, losing to Baruch 5-4 in a heartbreaker.

Fans who are looking to see the Bulldogs in action during Sunday's semifinal match should enter Queens College at the Reeves Avenue entrance, located at the intersection of 153 Street and Reeves Avenue.
