Softball Splits Doubleheader at Ramapo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Mahwah, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon on the road in Mahwah, NJ against the Roadrunners of Ramapo College. The host Roadrunners took the opener 9-3, while the Bulldogs took the nightcap, 5-3, to earn the hard fought split.

BC moves to even 8-8 overall on the season, while Ramapo goes to 8-9 overall on the year.

In game one, Brooklyn struck first scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first on RBI singles from sophomore Samantha Rodriguez and senior Stephanie Caravello, which scored junior Kayla Hill and senior Meagan Cranston, respectively.

The game would remain 2-0 in favor of the visiting Bulldogs until the bottom of the sixth, when Ramapo exploded for six runs on five hits. Danielle Saporito's three-run homerun over the left field fence capped the six-run rally to put the Roadrunners ahead, 6-2.

The home team would add another three runs on five hits in the fifth to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Mikayla Melendez's RBI double began the three-run inning, while Harley Masiello and Melissa Mereno added RBI singles.

Brooklyn would add a run in the seventh on an RBI single from senior Nicole Tufano that plated Caravello, as the Bulldogs would fall 9-3.

Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with an RBI for BC.

Melendez went a perfect 4-for-4 for Ramapo with an RBI and two runs scored, while Kim LaPenta went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Nicole Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Hill (2-3) took the loss for BC, tossing six innings, allowing nine runs on 13 hits and striking out four batters.  Her counterpart, Danielle Isenberg (1-1), picked up the win, surrendering three runs on 11 hits, while walking two and striking out one.

In game two, Brooklyn once again got on the scoreboard first, plating five runs on five hits in the top of the second. Hill's two-run double down the left field line highlighted the five-run rally, scoring senior Allison Donovan and Caravello. Hill would later cap the scoring by stealing home. Junior Geena Bell's RBI single that scored classmate Maria Mantagas began the rally, while Bell would come around to score on an RBI single from Cranston.

Ramapo would answer with a run in their half of the second, on an RBI double from Hernandez that scored Taylor Boffalo to make it 5-1.

The Roadrunners would add another run in the fourth and the sixth to cut their deficit to 5-3, the eventual final score. Taylor May's RBI single scored Boffalo in the fourth, while Jaclyn Lima's RBI single in the sixth brought home May.

May went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Lima, Melanie Walling and Hernandez all had a multi-hit game.

Senior Marie Oneto (4-3) picked up the win, allowing three runs on 12 hits, while walking three and striking out two over five innings. Classmate Amanda Bisz (1) earned the save, finishing the game giving up just one hit and striking out one over two innings of relief. Bisz came in relief in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and was able to get three straight outs to maintain the Bulldogs' 5-3 advantage.

Kristen Wilson (0-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs on five hits, while walking one over two innings. Nicole Schneider finished the game, allowing just one hit and a walk, while striking out one, over five innings.

Brooklyn returns to action this Saturday, April 5th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Briarcliffe College for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
