WEST QUAD CENTER Brooklyn, NY----The BC women's basketball team held on for their third win in a row this evening, defeating William Paterson, 52-50, in the final seconds of the game. BC improves to 4-2 with victory; WPU drops to 3-2. The Bulldogs will stay home on Wednesday, 12/2, to host Stevens Tech at 5:00 PM as part of a doubleheader with the men who will tip-off following the women's game.
With the game tied 50-50, the Bulldogs would force a turnover with 26 seconds left in regulation. Retaining possession,
Twanda Holder would drive the ball towards the net and was fouled in the act of shooting with six ticks left. Holder stepped to the line and calmly knocked down both free throws to give BC the 52-50 advantage and opportunity to win the game on defense. The Bulldogs did not let WPU get off a final shot to force the game into overtime.
Both teams exchanged baskets through the first quarter with the visitors winning the first period 14-12.
The Bulldogs would make their run in the second period, opening it with a 12-0 run to take a 22-14 lead in the first two-plus minutes. Junior forward
Olivia Colbert would score six points during the run. The Pioneers chipped away towards the end of the first half, knocking the Bulldogs' lead down to 28-23 at halftime.
BC extended their lead back to eight points with 3:53 left in the third period. However, the Pioneers battled back to within a point with a little over two minutes left in the third. A
Justine Vento three-point make and two successful free throw attempts by Colbert would push the game back to two possessions until William Paterson answered with a three of their own with :27 remaining in the third period.
The Pioneers took their first lead since the first period on a made three-pointer with 7:45 remaining in the game. After over a three minute stalemate, the Bulldogs would retake the lead on a Colbert layup with 4:28 remaining in the ballgame.
Tied 48-48 with 2:28 left in the game, guard
Karen Mak hit a jumper to give the Bulldogs the two-point advantage until WPU tied the game, which led to Holder's heroics at the charity stripe.
Colbert led all scorers with 19 points. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Holder added nine points on 3-4 from the field and a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line when it really mattered. Along with her clutch jumper down the stretch,
Karen Mak dished out eight assists on the evening.
