Box ScoreBrooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Tennis team (2-2) gutted out a solid 7-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon over the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College (NY) (2-2) in a non-conference match on the Roosevelt Courts.
Beginning with double play, the Bulldogs would take a 2-1 lead, as the tandem of
Elliot Haddad and
Charles Stevens defeated the pairing of Dan Witke and Joe Borden, 8-4, at #1 doubles, while the duo of
Jonathan Chevinsky and
Trevaughn Daley downed the team of Connor Bean and Connor Gargan, 8-3, at #2 doubles.
The Knights would get the win at #3 doubles, as Bryan Frank and Chris Jaros defeated
Alan Esses and
Andrew Mendelsohn, 8-1.
Using the momentum from its doubles play, Brooklyn would edge out five hard-fought wins of the six flights, as singles play would see eight tiebreakers.
Beginning at the top, Haddad earned a come-back win at #1 singles, as he dropped the opening set 7-5, before coming back to win the second set, 7-6 (7-3), to force a third set tie-breaker and complete the win, 1-0 (10-5).
Stevens outdueled Witke, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-1) at #2 singles, while Chevinsky outlasted Borden in the marathon match of the day at #3 singles. After Borden won the first set, 7-6 (7-5), Chevinsky came back to win the second set 6-3 and force another third set tiebreaker. Similar to Haddad, Chevinsky would earn the win in the third set, 1-0 (10-5), to complete the come-from-behind win.
Daley, a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, winner over Jaros at #5 singles and Mendelsohn, a 6-1, 7-5, winner over Joel Rodriguez at #6 singles completed the singles wins for BC.
Gargan earned Mount Saint Mary's lone win in singles, as he outlasted Esses, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) at #4 singles.
"I really liked our mental approach to this match," said head coach
Ahmad Odetalla. "There were a bunch of tiebreakers throughout singles and for us to win the majority of them was big for our morale. I look forward to us continuing our aggressive outlook against CCNY on Friday."
Brooklyn will resume with City University of New York Athletic Conference play on Friday, March 27th as the Bulldogs will take on the Beavers of The City College of New York (CCNY). The match is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start time on the Roosevelt Courts.
