Mahwah, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team dropped a 56-47 decision to Ramapo College (2-2) in the championship game of the 2008 Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament. Juniors Priscilla Ramirez (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brooklyn, NY) and Eja Wong (Chatsworth (CA) / New York, NY) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Ramirez scored eight straight points for Brooklyn at the start of the game as the Bridges enjoyed an early 8-3 lead. A Stepahnie Cannizaro (Pequannock / Pequannock, NJ) jumper then keyed an 11-2 Roadrunners rally that put the host team ahead 14-10 midway through the initial stanza. After another bucket by Ramirez cut the gap to two points the Brooklyn offense stagnated, missing 11 coinsecutive field goal attempts and committing seven turnovers. Ramapo scored the final 14 points of the period to take a 16 point lead at halftime.
The first five minutes of the second half saw the Roadrunners increase their lead to 19 points, 39-20, on a jumper by Malika Gilliam (Abraham Clark / Roselle, NJ) . Brooklyn then began to slowly chip away, scoring 16 of the next 19 points, closing the gap to six points, 42-36 on a pair of free throws by freshman Justine O'Callahan (Floral Park / Floral Park, NY) with just under nine minutes to play. Several minutes later, a three-point play by Wong brought the Bridges to within three, 45-42.
Ramapo, however, would not be denied. Tournament MVP Cannizaro hit a mid-range jumper on the next possession to up the lead to five points, and then hit four critical foul shots in the game's final two minutes to seal the victory.
Ramirez finished the day with game-highs 23 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in three games. She averaged 14.5 points per game to go along with 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in the tournament. Wong scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out four assists. Her tournament line was also impressive: 9.5 points per game, 6.5 caroms per contest, and 4.0 assists.
Brooklyn next plays on Tuesday November 25th, traveling to borough rival Polytechnic University. The game will be the first half of a doubleheader and is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm.
