Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team (7-3, 1-1 CUNYAC) used a three-pointer from
Christina Belfiore (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) with seven seconds remaining to defeat SUNY-Old Westbuty (5-3, 3-0 Skyline) 90-89 in a thrilling game played Saturday afternoon at the Roosevelt Gymnasium.
The Panthers came out strong, starting the game, scoring 15 of the first 21 points as Samantha Johnson's (Martin Van Buren / Queens, Village, NY) seven early points set the stage for an early nine point cushion.
Justine O'Callahan (Floral Park / Floral Park, NY) and
Priscilla Ramirez (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brooklyn, NY) than then combined to spur the Bridges on an 11-2 run that tied the game 17-17 midway through the opening stanza. Old Westbury then stepped it up, as Pamela Robinson (Half Hallows Hills West / Wheatley Heights, NY) and Avery Josey (Curtis / Staten Island, NY) combined to score 10 points pushing the lead to 14 points with 2:33 . A late triple by Ramirez brought BC to within 11 points at the break, 45-34.
Old Westbury was able to hang onto a double-digit lead for the first five minutes of the second period.
Megan Davidson (St. Edmund Prep / Brooklyn, NY) then converted a pair of lay-ups, surrounding buckets by
Jasmine Campbell (Copaigue / Copaigue, NY) and
Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) during an 8-0 spurt that brought the Bridges back to within three points, 56-53 with just over 12 minutes remaining. Moments later a Ramirez floater gave Brooklyn a one-point edge. The teams then traded baskets over the next nine minutes, with neither team able to push the margin to more than three points.
With just over four minutes to play, the score was knotted at 80-80. A three-pointer by Avery then put the Panthers ahead. Johnson soon followed with a lay-in, give the Panthers a five-point lead heading into the final two minutes. Davidson then took over, hitting a foul shot and a pair of short jumpers to bring the Bridges back even with the Panthers with 1:06 to play. Johnson and Davidson again traded buckets, and the game was tied 87-87 with 29 seconds left to play.
The Panthers called a time-out, and Robinson drained a long jumper off the inbounds pass to put Old Westbury up a pair. In transition, Ramirez found Belfiore in front of the Brooklyn bench, and the southpaw shooter drilled home a trifecta that would turn into the game winner. The Panthers had one final chance, but the Bridges applied stifiling man-to-man pressure and time expired without Old Westbuty getting a shot off.
Ramirez scored 27 points and grabbed six boards to lead the Bridges, Davidson had her best game of the season, scoring 16 points and collecting 13 caroms for her first double-double of the year. O'Callahan added 18 points, seven rebounds, and one block in the win. The Panthers were paced by Johnson's 24 points and Robinson's 22. Avery added 14 points and a pair of assists off the bench.
The Bridges will now take a break from the hardwood, pausing for final exams and Holiday celebrations, before returning to the court on January 3rd. That afternoon, the team will host Pine Manor College in the Roosevelt Gymnasium. Gametime is set for 1:00 pm.
