BC Women Take Conference Opener, Downing York 79-75

Jamaica, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team (4-1, 1-0 CUNYAC) traveled to York College (0-2, 0-1 CUNYAC) on Tuesday night and defeated the Cardinals 79-75, in the conference opener for both squads.

Brooklyn got off to a good start, using a three-point play from sophomore Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) and a pair of trifectas from junior Eja Wong (Chatsworth (CA) / New York, NY) to take an early 15-7 advantage.  The Cardinals rallied over the next seven minutes, pulling to within two points, 25-23.  Junior Priscilla Ramirez (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brooklyn, NY) and freshman Demi Quintana (Abraham Lincoln / Brooklyn, NY) then combined to score the next 11 points, giving the Bridges their largest lead of the night, 38-25 with just over four minutes remaining in the first half.   A three-pointer by Dolores Mayweather ignited a 9-0 York run to close out the half, sending Brooklyn into the break with a five-point cushion (43-38).

A pair of Ramirez lay-ups bookended a Wong three-pointer to open the second stanza, again stretching the Brooklyn advantage to double digits, 50-39.  Another three by Mayweather capped a 13-2 York rally that knotted the score at 52-52 with just over 11 minutes to play.  The contest was quickly untied as sophomore Ashley Allen (William C. Bryant / Sunnyside, NY) drained a long three-pointer.  Two minutes later, with the score locked at 58-58 Quintana connected on a long-range jumper to give the Bridges the lead for good.  Brooklyn would push the lead to eight in the final minute, before a pair of York buckets set the final margin.

Ramirez, one of four starters with at least 10 points, recorded her third double-double of the season, pacing the Bridges with 24 points and 10 boards, She also added a career-high of seven assists.  Wong scored 15 points and dished out four assists. Brooklyn converted a season-high nine three pointers in the game, led by Quintana who had four in a career-high 14 point performance.  Freshman Justine O'Callahan (Floral Park / Floral Park, NY) chipped in with 10 points and  collected six caroms.

Brooklyn will host Staten Island on Thursday in what will be an early season battle for first place in the CUNYAC South Division as both teams will enter the game 1-0 in conference play.  Gametime is 5:30 pm.
