Bridges Drop Close One in Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

The Bronx, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team (4-3, 1-1 CUNYAC) participated in the first annual CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Lehman College on Saturday evening.  The Bridges dropped an 81-80 decision to Purchase College (5-2, 2-0 Skyline).

The opening stanza was a back and forth affair , as the two teams tied six times in the first fourteen minutes of play.  With the score knotted at 23-23, Christina Belfiore (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) hit a pair of foul shots that started an 11-1 run that gave the Bridges a 34-24 lead with under four minutes to play.  Brooklyn went to the locker room with a five-point edge.

A three-pointer by Jessie Domes pulled the Panthers to within four points, 47-43 five minutes into the second half.  Brooklyn then went on to score 17 of the next 19 points, as Jasmine Campell (Copaigue / Copaigue, NY) and Megan Davidson (St. Edmund Prep / Brooklyn, NY) each converted on three-point plays to take a 19 point advantage midway through the period,  Moments later, a Belfiore trifecta pushed the margin to a game-high 20 points with 8:42 remaining,

Three-pointers by Domes and Jennifer Danio started a 16-2 Panther rally that brought Purchase to within six points, 69-63 with just over five minutes to play.  The Bridges would extend the bulge to 11 points on a Priscilla Ramirez (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brooklyn, NY) three-point play with 4:00 remaining.  Danio hit back-to-back triples in the final minute to turn a five-point deficit into a one point Panther advantage.  Now trailing 79-78, the Bridges found Belfiore, whose finger roll put BC on top by one point with 10 seconds to go.  With three seconds on the clock, Domes was fouled as she drove the baseline and then made both free throws, putting her team up one.  The Bridges could not get a shot off on their last posession.

Belfiore netted a season-high 24 points for the Bridges.  Rmairez scored 17 and added a team-high eight boards and five assists. Danio scored a game-high 29 for the Panthers, while Domes added 26.

Brooklyn hosts St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on Monday evening at 7:30 pm in the Roosevelt Gymnasium.
