Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak To Seven Games As They Down John Jay 58-55

Box Score

New York, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Squad (11-3, 4-1 CUNYAC) extended their winning streak to seven games as they traveled to John Jay (1-13, 0-5 CUNYAC) on Wednesday night, knocking off the Bloodhounds 58-55.

An early Brooklyn lead quickly evaporated, as an 8-0 run by John Jay boosted the home squad to a 12-7 lead seven minutes into the contest.  A pair of foul shots by freshman Amber Gordon (Bishop Louchlin / Brooklyn, NY) brought the Bridges back to within three points, but BC was unable to get any closer in the period.  A Domenique Grice (North Babylon / North Babylon, NY) bucket capped a 16-7 spurt by John Jay that stretched the lead to 12 points, 30-18 with just over three minutes to go in the opening stanza. A lay-up by Justine O'Callahan (Floral Park / Floral Park, NY) and a three-point play by Jasmine Campbell (Copaigue / Copaigue, NY) closed the half with the Bridges trailing by five, 33-28.

The second half started with a bang, as Gordon used a personal 6-0 run over the first two and a half minutes of the period to put the Bridges back on top.  A lay-up by Tina Ogunleye (Central Islip / Islandia, NY) soon followed to put John Jay back on top.  That was the first of five lead changes over the next 16 minutes. A free throw by Grice knotted the score at 52-52 with 3:19 remaining in regulation.

More than a minute elapsed before either team again scored, and it would be the Bridges that broke the stalemate.  Priscilla Ramirez (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brooklyn, NY) sank one-of-two from the charity stripe and Gordon soon followed with a jumper of her own to give BC a three-point edge.  A pair of free throws in the final seconds from O'Callahan sealed the victory for the Bridges.

Gordon had a banner night, scoring a season-high 21 points on an 8-of-15 shooting performance.  She also collected four steals while dishing out three assists.  O'Callahan posted a double-double, her fourth of the season, with 15 points and 12 boards. The Bloodhounds were paced by Grice, who scored a game-high of 23 points. Ogunleye was dynamite on the glass in defeat, collecting 19 caroms.

The Brooklyn Women will travel to Hunter on Friday as they battle the Hawks, who are currently in third place in the CUNYAC North standings. Game time is set for 5:00 pm.
