Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team (17-7, 9-4 CUNYAC) defeated York College (7-16, 5-8 CUNYAC) by a score of 77-63 on Saturday afternoon. The win is the third in the last four games for the Bridges, who will be the number four seed in the upcoming CUNYAC / Con Edison Women's Basketball Tournament. The nine CUNYAC games won by the Bridges are the most in school history.
Brooklyn exploded right from the start, going on a game-opening 12-3 run as
Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Astoria, NY) and
Megan Davidson (St. Edmund Prep / Brooklyn, NY) each netted four early points. A three-pointer from
Christina Belfiore (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) put the exclaimation point on the 25-5 BC spurt. The Cardinals then forced turnovers on three consecutive possessions, converting the chances into seven points to pull to within 25-12. An
Ashley Allen (William C. Bryant / Astoria, NY) trifecta stretched the BC lead to 33-14 with 4:00 to play in the first half.
York started the second stanza on an 11-4 run, to cut the gap to 15 points on a Justina Boatwright (Martin van Buren / Queens, NY) jumper. The margin would sway between 14 and 19 points over the next five minutes until a Niya Jarvis (Talent Unlimited / Bronx, NY) lay-up cut the deficit to single digits, 67-58 with 4:30 remaining.
Justine O'Callahan (Floral Park / Floral Park, NY) converted a pair of clutch free throws moments later to expand the BC lead to 11. Allen and
Priscilla Ramirez (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brooklyn, NY) combined to hit eight free throws in the final 90 seconds to seal the win for the Bridges.
Five players scored at least 10 points for the Bridges, who used a balanced attack to record the victory. Allen led Brooklyn with 13 points; O'Callahan had 12. Boatwright was the game's leading scorer, netting 14 points in defeat.
The win also tied head coach
Alex Lang for most career coaching victoires (65) in Brooklyn College's history.
The Bridges will travel to Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday evening to conclude their regular season with a non-conference tilt. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
