Bridges Claw Past Cougars 62-58

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team (15-6, 7-3 CUNYAC) shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, defeating Medgar Evers College (9-13, 4-6 CUNYAC) 62-58 on Wednesday evening at the Roosevelt Gymnasium.

The game started off slowly, as a pair of Priscilla Ramirez (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brooklyn, NY) foul shots gave the Bridges an 8-7 lead five minutes into the game.  The BC lead would swing between one and five points over the next 10 minutes until a jumper from Justine O'Callahan (Floral Park / Floral Park, NY) started a 7-2 run that pushed the advantage to 10 points, 27-17 with three minutes to play in the period.  A pair of free throws Tabrese Harris (East New York Family Academy / Brooklyn, NY) and a jumper by Shauntelle Nelson (August Martin / Queens, NY) keyed the period-closing 7-4 Cougar spurt.

Harris and Nelson continued to score in the early going of the second period, combining to score 10 points in frame's opening three minutes.  The overall run was 17-6 for Medgar Evers and turned a 10-point deficit into a one-point edge, 36-35 with 17:01 remaining.  Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) and Christina Belfiore (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) paired to score nine points during a 12-4 Bridges run to reclaim the lead.

MEC would cut the margin to one point with 6:18 to go on a jumper by Dabrena Sebastian (Benjamin Bannekar / Brooklyn, NY), which capped a string of three straight Cougar baskets.  Ramirez responded for Brooklyn with back-to-back jumpers that increased the margin back to five points, 57-52 with just over two minutes on the clock.  Late jumers by O'Callahan and Ramirez sealed the triumph for the Bridges.

Ramirez recorded her second consecutive double-double, notching a team-high 24 points and 11 rebounds.  She also added seven assists and three steals to her impressive stat line.  Gordon netted 16 points, while O'Callahan chipped in with 12 points, nine boards, and six assists.  

Harris scored a game-high 25 points to lead Medgar Evers in defeat, while Nelson added 15 tallies of her own.

The Bridges now take to the road for a pair of CUNYAC South division contests, traveling to City Tech on Friday eveing before crossing the Verrazzano for a date with Staten Island next Wednesday.
