Bridges Rally from 2-0 Down to Defeat Cardinals in Five

Box Score

Jamaica, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball Team (5-14, 4-9 CUNYAC) dropped the first two sets at York College (8-19, 6-7 CUNYAC) but then rallied to win the next three.  The Bridges came out on a top in an extremely tight contest, winning 3-2 (26-30, 24-30, 30-28, 30-26, 18-16).

After losing the first two sets, BC battled back. With the scored tied at 27-27 in the third, Brooklyn scored the next two points to force set point. York fought off one point but Tommy Ma (New Utrecht / Brooklyn, NY) finished off the set with a kill.  The Bridges rode the momentum to a big lead in the fourth set, leading 19-9 at one point. The Cardinals rallied to within three points late in the set but it was too late, as BC claimed the set for force a 15-point, winner-take-all fifth game.

In the deciding set, York took an 11-7 lead that seemed to be comfortable, but a kill by David Mayerson (Lawrence / North Woodmere, NY) started a string of four straight Brooklyn points.  York retook the lead, 15-14 and had a chance to put the match away, but Ma responded with another kill.  Roger Ruiviver (Herricks Herricks, NY) followed with an attack of his own that set up a match point.  Ma's spike landed untouched on the other side of the net giving the Bridges the improbable victory.

Ma led the Brooklyn attack, finishing with 25 kills, 23 digs, and 12 assists.  Mayerson posted an impressive stat line as well, contributing 13 kills, 41 assists, and 21 digs.  The Cardinals were paced by Martin Kasza, who recorded 16 kills.

The Bridges will next play on Thursday evening, hosting St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn in a non-conference tilt.  The first serve is set for 6:00 pm.  Prior to the match, Brooklyn College will honor the senior members of the Men's Volleyball program.
