Men's Volleyball Drops Season Opener

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball Team (0-1) dropped its season opener, and head coaching debut of Trish Morris, to New Jersey City University (2-1) by a score of 1-3 (13-30, 13-30, 30-25, 10-30).

In the first set, the score was tied at four before the Gothic Knights went on a 16-2 run to make the score 20-6. The run was led by Casey Blake (Bayonne / Bayonne, NJ) and multiple service errors and attack errors by the Bulldogs.

The second set was tied at 8-8 before NJCU made another run. This time, a 12-2 run, was a well-rounded attack, with no player standing about above the others. 

The third set, the only one taken by the Bulldogs, finished at 30-25. The Bulldogs came back from a15-9 deficit thanks to David Choy (Telecommunications / Brooklyn, NY) and unforced errors by NJCU. At a score of 23-23, Brooklyn outscored NJCU 7-2 to close out the set, due to six errors by the Gothic Knights.

In the fourth, NJCU took an early 12-1 lead and never looked back, taking the set, and the match, 10-30. 

Rogelio Griffith (William E. Grady / Brooklyn, NY) led the Bulldogs with nine kills and one block. The freshman hit .467. The rest of the team did not fair as well, having just eight kills and 22 errors on 71 attempts, hitting -.197. Fellow freshman Guillermo Melosevich (East Side / Belleville, NJ), a setter, finished with 13 assists, six digs, and four aces.

NJCU was led by freshman Casey Blake. Blake, a freshman middle blocker, had a .750 hitting percentage, added nine blocks, and contributed 12 kills, with no errors, in 19 attempts. 

The Gothic Knights are now 18-0 all-time against the Bulldogs.

Up next for the Bulldogs, a CUNYAC match at City Tech on Tuesday, February 2 at 6:00 pm. The first home match for the men's volleyball team is on February 11 at 7:00 pm against Baruch.
