Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn Bulldogs (16-10, 9-4 CUNYAC) lost their CUNYAC / Con Edison Basketball Championship quarterfinals game against Lehman (11-15, 8-5 CUNYAC) by a score of 73-56 today at the West Quad Gymnasium.
The first half was a game of long runs for each team. The Bulldogs started the game off hot, going on a 14-2 run, thanks to a stifling defense that forced three turnovers and six missed shots in the first four minutes and 30 seconds. Lehman would follow with a run of their own, outscoring Brooklyn 25-6 in the next seven and a half minutes. During this period, the Bulldogs were ice cold, shooting just 1-11, while the Lighting were on fire, hitting 10 of their 13 shots. Down 27-18, Brooklyn began their comback at the 7:30 mark, going on a 15-10 run to end the half down just four, 33-37.
The Bulldogs would tie the game at 39 at the 15:45 mark in the second half on a fast break layup by
Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY), off a steal by
Ariel Smith (Wallkill / Newburgh, NY). After a Lightning layup,
Amber Gordon gathered a steal and passed to
Priscilla Ramirez (FDR / Brooklyn, NY), to tie it up at 41. This is the last time the Bulldogs would be even with Lehman. In the next 8:30 of play, the Lightning would open up a 16 point lead with 5:12 to play; a lead that would prove to be insurmountable for the Bulldogs.
On the game, Brooklyn hit just 31% of their shots, and just 10% of their three point attempts. Lehman hit 52% percent of their shots and 38% of their threes.
The Bulldogs were led in both points and rebounds by
Frances Lyons (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY), with 15 points and seven boards.
Ariel Smith and
Justin O'Callahan (Floral Park / Floral Park, NY) both netted double figures, scoring 13 and 12 respectively.
Lehman was steadied by Leslie Mencia (Montpelier, Montpelier, VT). Her 18 points was tops for the team and she added nine caroms. Melissa St. Louis (Sheepshead Bay / Brookyn, NY) had a double double on the day, with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kelsey Ash (Santana / Santee, CA) also scored in double figures, dropping 14 points.
