Slow Start Dooms Bulldogs As Rutgers Camden Escapes With 53-46 Win

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team fell to 9-8 on the season as they dropped a home game to visiting Rutgers Camden, 53-46 on Monday evening.  The Scarlet Raptors improve to 8-11 on the season, including a 6-5 record over their last 11 games.

The Bulldogs could not bye a bucket early as they were held scoreless for the first 6:19 of the game, falling behind 8-0.  Tiayana Logan put an end to the early drought, scoring a layup on a feed from Justine O'Callahan to give BC their first two points of the game.

A Brittany Turner jumper extended the Camden lead to 10-2, before Lauren Plagainos answered with a long three-pointer to cut the defeicit to five.

After two Turner free throws extended the lead to seven, 12-5, Brooklyn went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 14-12 with 8:27 remaining.  During the run, Ariel Smith scored five points while O'Callahan and Elisha Raiford each poured in baskets.

A Stephanie Deisley three with 5:29 remaining, would give the Scarlet Raptors back the lead which they would extend to six, 26-20 by halftime.

Camden would keep control of the game for much of the second half, extending the lead to as many as 11, however BC had a final run left in them as a Raiford free throw would cut the deficit to four, 48-44 with 2:21 remaining.

On Camden's next possession Turner would be the recipient of a questionable foul call, sending her to the line for the single bonus.  She connected on both, however Ariel Smith would be able to answer back with a bucket to make the score 50-46.

After forcing a turnover on the next possession, Brooklyn was unable to capitalize, giving the ball back to Camden as Smith tried to split a double-team and Samantha Bragg came up with the steal.  Bragg was fouled, however she missed the front end of the one-and-one, but a Smith jumper was off the mark and the Bulldogs were once again forced to foul Bragg.

Bragg made both attempts this time, giving her team an insurmountable six point lead and the win.

Brooklyn will look to bounce back against conference opponent John Jay on Wednesday evening in a battle of 5-2 records in conference play.  The game will have a huge impact on seeding heading into the postseason conference tournament.  Rutgers Camden will head to Jersey City on Saturday to take on the Gothic Knights in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest.
