Jamaica, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team dropped a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match to the Cardinals of York College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 35-33). With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 2-3 overall on the season and 2-2 in conference play; while the Cardinals improve to 7-5 overall on the year and 3-2 in league play.
Brooklyn was led by freshman
Alexander Shlivko who posted a game-high 12 kills. Sophomore
Guillermo Melosevich dished out 20 assists, while
Gene Tom and
Timothy Hui each contributed with seven digs.
York had two players with double digit kills as Ahmed Helmi and Alex Niles finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Helmi also had five service aces as he hit .526 (12 kills/2 errors/19 total attacks). As a team, the Cardinals hit .311 for the night (40 kills/12 errors/90 total attacks). Scott Luna paced the offense with 29 assists and Terrence Sutton chipped in with seven digs.
The Cardinals took the first set with relative ease as they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, en route to taking the opening set 25-17. The second set featured much of the same as York downed BC 25-11 in the second stanza.
The third and final set featured a seesaw battle. The Bulldogs took an early lead jumping out to a 9-3 advantage. York would chip away at their deficit tying the game at 11 all. Both teams would exchange points down the stretch with each squad reaching set point, but it would be the Cardinals who would eventually edge out a thrilling 35-33 victory.
Brooklyn returns to action this Saturday, February 12th, as the Bulldogs will travel upstate to Annandale-on-Hudson, NY to take on the Raptors of Bard College in a non-conference match-up. Start time is slated for 2:00 pm.
