BC Women's Basketball Blows By York, 95-69, Clinches South Division Title

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team improved to 10-2 in conference play on Wednesday evening as they blew past York, 95-69.  The Bulldogs improve to 14-9 overall while the Cardinals fall to 9-14 and 6-5 in CUNYAC play..

The 10 wins in conference sets an all-time mark for the Bulldogs women's basketball program.  The high of nine achieved twice in the previous two seasons, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010.

In addition, the win clinched the South Diviision Title for the second consecutive season and what a night it was to do it as the Bulldogs put up a season-high 95 points, including 51 first half points.

BC set the pace early as Justine O'Callahan scored on consecutive buckets to give her team the early 4-0 lead in the first minute of the game.

After a York basket cut the lead to 4-2, Brooklyn went on  a 6-0 run, getting baskets from Tiayana Logan, Lauren Plagainos and O'Callahan to balloon the advantage to 10-2.  Both teams were able to get good scoring opportunities over the next few minutes of the game as the score quickly grew to 31-21, as York's Elizabeth Padilla hit a three-pointer with 8:13 to go in the half.

BC went on a 10-2 run over the next 2:48, capped off by an Amber Gordon layup, giving them an 18-point lead, 41-23, with 5:25 remaining in the period.

York chipped away, going on a 9-4 run of their own to cut the deficit to 13, however a Gordon three, followed by a Plagainos three as time wound down, gave the Bulldogs a 19-point advantage, 51-32, going into the intermission.

Senior guard Ariel Smith, who played all 20 first-half minutes, led the team with six points, nine assists and six rebounds, while O'Callahan, Plagainos and Gordon each had 12 points at the break.

The team shot an amazing 59% from the field in the half, including 5-9 from behind the arc.  Amazingly they did not attempt a single free throw in the period.

Coming out of the break the Bulldogs kept up their remarkable pace as they started the half with a 20-5 run, expanding the margin to 34, 71-37, with 13:51 to play.

Smith, who spent most of the first half rewarding her teammates, got into the action herself during the run, scoring eight points during the stretch.

York never challenged as Brooklyn increased the lead to as much as 37.

Smith finished the game one rebound shy of a triple-double, scoring 18 points, while dishing out 13 assists and pulling down nine boards.  She was 9-10 from the field while playing 33 minutes, and was one of five BC players to reach double-figure scoring.

O'Callahan finished with 16 points and seven boards, while Elisha Raiford, held scoreless in the first half, finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Plagainos and Gordon both finished with 12, while Tiayana Logan had a good game as well, scroing eight whle grabbing nine caroms.

The Cardinals were led by Shadae Rice and Padilla who each notched 22 points on the evening.
