Brooklyn, NY --- In its 2011 regular season finale, the Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team defeated the Panthers of Purchase College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-16), on Saturday afternoon at the West Quad Center. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 8-13 overall on the season, while the Panthers drop to 2-14.
Prior to the start of the match, seniors
Adam Metzler and
Jesus Gonzales were honored as part of Senior Day celebrations.
Brooklyn was led by sophomore
Keiran Halton who recorded a match-high 11 kills, hitting .400 (11 kills/3 errors/20 total attacks) on the day, to go along with two solo blocks and a block assist. Metzler chipped in with eight kills, while juniors
Gene Tom and
Duong Thai helped pace the offense with 14 and 12 assists, respectively. Freshman
Timothy Hui played solid defensively with 20 digs.
For the Panthers, Kevon Kareem Bruce posted a team-best seven kills, to go with six digs, while Bruno Estrada dished out 12 assists on the day. Thomas DeCarlo added 11 digs on the day.
The first set featured a tight matchup as both teams battled back and forth. Tied at 19 late in the opening set, the Bulldogs would close out the game on a 6-3 run to edge out the Panthers 25-22. Brooklyn recorded 11 kills in the set and was aided by six attack errors from Purchase.
Using the momentum of its first set victory, BC began the second set by scoring the first four points to take an early 4-0 advantage. The Bulldogs would never trail in the set as Brooklyn would go on to the 25-18 win. The Bulldogs also benefited from eight attack errors by the Panthers, while tallying 13 kills in the set.
The third and final set once again featured a seesaw battle throughout much of the game. Holding on to a slim 18-16 lead, the Bulldogs rattled off seven straight points to close out the game 25-16 for the straight sets victory.
BC has now won three straight matches as they will enter the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) tournament as the #6 seed after posting a 5-9 record in league play. Brooklyn will take on #3 Lehman College on Tuesday, March 22nd. The Bulldogs and Lighting split their regular season series this year, with Brooklyn winning the first match, 3-1, (27-25, 27-29, 27-25, 25-20) back on February 5th on a neutral court at Baruch College, while Lehman defended its home court on February 24th winning in straight sets, 3-0, (25-14, 25-17, 25-20).
