Vanessa D'Ambrosi each recorded a double-double in leading the Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team to a 66-50 victory over the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday night at the West Quad Center. The Bulldogs have now won four straight games to improve to 4-1 overall on the season, while the Ducks drop to 3-2 overall on the year.
Thompson finished the night with 16 points and game-high 15 rebounds, while D'Ambrosi netted a game-best 20 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Junior forward
T'Keyah Francis chipped in with 11 rebounds coming off the bench, as BC out-rebounded Stevens 58-48. Winning the battle of the glass enabled Brooklyn to own a 20-11 advantage in second chance points, as well as a 36-20 edge in points in the paint. Senior guard
Charnelle Saint Laurent contributed with seven points and six assists.
The beginning of the first half featured a tight affair, as the teams combined for three ties and five lead changes. Following a pair of free throws from Molly Spadaro, which gave the Ducks their largest lead of the half, 13-7, with 7:58 left before the intermission break, BC used a 15-4 run to turn the tables and take its largest lead of the half, 22-17, with just 2:14 remaining before halftime. Thompson and D'Ambrosi combined to score 10 of the 15 points in the run. The Bulldogs would head into the locker room with a slim 27-24 advantage.
Brooklyn would carry its momentum from the first half into the second, as the Bulldogs would eventually build a double-digit lead on a three-pointer from senior guard
Brittany Bowen at the 13:34 mark of the second half, giving BC a 40-30 lead. Brooklyn would lead by as many as 17, as BC would cruise to its 66-50 victory, after outscoring the Ducks 39-26 in the final period.
The Bulldogs' stingy defense held Stevens to just 26.3% (15-57) shooting from the field for the game. The Ducks also went 0-10 from beyond the arc on the night and converted 65.5% (20-31) from the free throw line. Brooklyn recorded 14 steals and forced Stevens into 27 turnovers, which led to 20 points for the Bulldogs.
BC shot 32.5% (26-80) from the field and 21.1% (4-19) from three. The Bulldogs also converted 50.0% (10-20) from the charity stripe.
The Ducks were led by Miranda Ripken's team-high 17 points, to go along with nine rebounds. Cassie Nichols grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds on the night.
Brooklyn will be back in action this Saturday, December 1st, as the Bulldogs will cross the Verrazano to take on City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival the College of Staten Island. Tip-off is slated for 12:00 pm at the CSI Sports Complex.
