Sluggish Second Half Downs Women’s Basketball at Staten Island

Box Score Staten Island, NY --- A sluggish second half led to a come-from-behind victory for the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island today over the Brooklyn College Bulldogs in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Women's Basketball match-up at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center.

CSI defeated BC, 67-65, to improve to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the CUNYAC; while the Bulldogs fall to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The loss snaps Brooklyn's four-game winning streak.

BC senior guard Brittany Bowen led all scorers with a game-high 26 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field, including going 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and also 7-for-9 from the charity stripe. She also added a game-best six steals, to go along with five rebounds. For the second straight game, senior forward Tiffany Thompson recorded a double-double with a game-leading 13 rebounds and 10 points. Sophomore Nicole Francomano dished out four assists, to go with seven points and five steals.

The Dolphins had four starters score in double figures led by Megan Myhre's team-high 16 points. Melanie Johnson added 15 points and six assists, while Olivia Tierno finished the afternoon with 13 points. Nikki Fabozzi filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

The first half featured five ties, as both teams looked to take control of the game. Following a lay-up from Bowen at the 10:52 mark of the opening period, which gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game, 17-15, CSI's Danielle Kartalis quickly tied the game for the fourth time at 17-17 with a jumper at the 10:16 mark.  Bowen would later give Brooklyn the lead again with a pair of free throws, 19-17; however the Dolphins' Myhre would answer with a jumper to tie the game for the fifth time at 19 all with 9:34 remaining before the halftime break.

With the game tied at 19-19, CSI's offense would go cold over the next six minutes, as the Bulldogs used a 16-0 run to take a 35-19 lead with 3:40 left in the half. Bowen and junior Vanessa D'Ambrosi contributed with 10 of the 16 points in the run, scoring five points apiece. Brooklyn would eventually take a 14-point lead, 40-26, into the intermission break.

The Dolphins would not go down lightly, as CSI came out of the locker room determined to get back into the game. The home team began to slowly cut their deficit and would eventually regain the lead on a three-pointer from Myhre with 3:27 left in the game, after tying the game on three occasions in the second half.

With the score tied at 65-65, for the 10th time on the day, and just 1:02 remaining in the game, both teams looked to edge out the close victory as the game came down to the wire. In the end, it would be CSI's Johnson and her pair of free throws that would eventually seal the Dolphins' 67-65 come-from-behind victory. The Bulldogs would have a couple of opportunities to tie the game and force overtime in the closing seconds; however, the team would fail to capitalize on their chances.

The game featured a tale of two halves, as BC outscored CSI 40-26 in the first half, while CSI returned the favor outscoring BC 41-25 in the second half to squeak out the win.

For the game, BC shot 35.9% (23-64) from the field, including 33.3% (5-15) from three. Brooklyn also shot 66.7% (14-21) from the foul line. The Bulldogs held the rebounding edge 46-37 and also forced CSI into 25 turnovers while recording 18 steals.

CSI shot 37.0% (20-54) from the field and 32.0% (8-25) from beyond the arc. The Dolphins also converted 65.5% (19-29) from the charity stripe and forced the Bulldogs into 26 turnovers.

Brooklyn returns to the hardwood this Monday, December 3rd, as the Bulldogs will host New York University at the West Quad Center Gym. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 pm tip-off. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free t-shirt. Doors open at 4:45 pm.
