New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team fell to the Hawks of Hunter College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-6, 25-16, 25-17), in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match at the Hunter Sportsplex. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play; while the Hawks improve to 4-6 overall and 3-0 in league play.
BC was led by sophomore
Alexander Shlivko who recorded a match-high nine kills on the night. Senior
Duong Thai and freshman
David Dimitruk each finished the game with three kills apiece. Senior
Gene Tom dished out 14 assists, while Thai and sophomore
Timothy Hui registered five digs each.
Hunter was led by Braien Otsla's seven kills, while Chris Newcomb added five kills. Stanley Martinez paced the offense with a match-best 21 assists, while Eric Lodde tallied eight digs.
The Hawks controlled much of the first set hitting a solid .429 (9 kills/3 errors/14 total attacks) to take the opening set 25-6.
Trailing 5-3 early in the second set, the Bulldogs rattled off the next four straight points to take a 7-5 lead. BC would later lead 8-6, before the Hawks jumped used a 4-0 run of their own to regain the lead, 10-8. Hunter would never trail in the set as the home team would go on to take the 25-16 victory. The Hawks had another strong offensive performance, hitting .304 (13 K/6 E/23 TA).
The third set featured a tight seesaw battle early on. After Brooklyn tied the match at 11-11, Hunter scored the next four points to take a 15-11 lead. The Hawks would go on to take the set and the match, 25-17.
“Hunter played really well,” said Head Coach
Michael Salak. “We did not put enough pressure on them to force the Hawks to alter their game. Our guys played better tonight and I hope that will carry into our next games this weekend.”
Brooklyn returns to action on Sunday, February 19th, as the Bulldogs will travel to New Haven, CT to take on Yeshiva University and Albertus Magnus College in a tri-match. BC will take on Yeshiva at 1:00 pm and host Albertus Magnus at 3:00 pm.
