Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Past Medgar Evers

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team picked up its first City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) win of the season tonight, with its straight sets victory over borough rival Medgar Evers College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 27-25), at the Cougars Cave on the campus of Medgar Evers.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 4-8 overall on the year and 1-4 in the CUNYAC; while the Cougars fall to 0-10 overall on the season and 0-3 in the conference.

Junior David Rafailov led the way for BC totaling a match-high 14 kills, while hitting a solid .391 on the night. Freshman David Dimitruk chipped in with nine kills hitting .471, while Gene Tom dished out a match-best 29 assists. Sophomore Timothy Hui registered nine digs.

For Medgar Evers, Jason Brown, Jamal Baptiste and Orlando Cummings paced the offense with eight kills apiece. Lancedale Calderon handed out 19 assists, to go along with match-high 10 digs to record a double-double.

Brooklyn controlled the first two sets with strong hitting performances, as the Bulldogs hit .250 (14 kills/six errors/32 total attacks) in the first set and .312 (13 kills/3 errors/32 total attacks) in the second set, en route to 25-17 and 25-19 wins, respectively.

BC would struggle in the third set hitting just .095 (15 kills/11 errors/42 total attacks), as the Bulldogs would eventually gut out a hard fought 27-25 victory to take the set and match.

“Overall, we did not play as well as expected,” said Head Coach Michael Salak. “Credit goes to Medgar who played harder than us.”

Brooklyn returns to action this Thursday, March 1st, as the Bulldogs will be on the road to take on the Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY) in a CUNYAC match-up. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm.
