Brooklyn, NY---In what was a marathon game that saw a total of 92 attempted free throws, the Brooklyn College Bulldogs fell to visiting Richard Stockton, 90-76, in overtime at the West Quad Center on Saturday afternoon. WIth the win, the Ospreys improve to 13-9, while the loss snapped the Bulldogs eight-game winning streak and dropped their overall record to 16-6.
Stockton started the game with a quick 10-2 run as Brooklyn failed to convert on many early opportunities. A
Lauren Plagainos three cut tthe deficiit to 10-5, and then
Charnelle Saint Laurent ran off seven consecutive points for BC, to tie the game at 12 with 12:49 to go in the half.
Baskets by
Melissa St. Louis and Plagainos, gave Brooklyn a four point lead that they would hold onto until an Aliyah Nelson layup got the ospreys back on top with 3:41 to play. A
Nicole Francomano free throw and a
Justine O'Callahan drive would get the home team the lead right back, 27-25, but a Nelson three would cap a 7-0 run that would give Stockton a five point advantage with 1:45 to go in the half.
Francomano would force the issue and get to the line on the final two possessions of the half, making all four attempts to bring her team within one, 32-31, going into the locker room.
In the second half, Plagainos started the scoring with a jumper to give her team the lead. They would hold onto the advantage, and get it to as many as five, until the 13:31 mark, as a Francomano foul, the eight team foul called to that point, got an irate reaction from Head Coach
Alex Lang, who was assessed a technical foul. With the score 43-42 in Brooklyn's favor, Stockton converted on only one of two on both the technical and foul shots, taking a one point lead, 44-43.
Brooklyn would immediately regain the lead as a Tiffany Thompson free throw and a Plagainos bucket would put the Bulldogs up by two. While the Ospreys would tie on a couple of occasions, the next time they would regain the lead would be with 8:12 remaining in regulation, as two Nelson free throws gave her team a 52-50 lead.
The visitors would extend the lead to as many as six before the Bulldogs would come fighting back once again, as a Saint Laurent three with 2:06 would give BC the lead, 63-62.
A Che'Na Thompson jumper would give the lead back to Stockton, but on the next possession Francomano would find O'Callahan under the basket to return the lead to the home team.
Stockton got the ball back in the hands of Nelson who miss-fired on a driving attempt but Lauren Alwan came up with a huge offensive rebound, and was fouled by St. Louis while making the put-back. After making the free throw, Stockton led 67-65 with 1:01 remaining.
Saint Laurent was not done, as she drove and scored to tie the game at 67 with 48 seconds remaining. After a BC timeout to set up their defense, the Ospreys' Thompson could not hit on a runner, as St. Louis brought down the rebound. After advancing the ball over the halfcourt line, BC called another timeout.
Brooklyn got the ball in the hands of Saint Laurent, who found St. Louis, who was knocked off balance but not granted the foul call. After gathering herself, St. Louis found and open Francomano, who attempted the go-ahead three-pointer, but could not hit as time expired.
In the overtime period, Brooklyn came out flat, as the visitors were able to build an early seven point lead that eventually ballooned to a 14-point win as BC was forced to foul in the last couple minutes.
Saint Laurent led all scorers with 25 points, while Nelson led Stockton with 22, 17 of which came from the charity stripe.
Francomano (15), O'Callahan (14) and Plagainos (13) each scored in double figures for the Bulldogs. O'Callahan (13), Thompson (10) and St. Louis (10) each grabbed double figure rebounds.
Stockton only shot 32% from the field but lived at the foul line where they converted on 78% (47-60) on the day.
Brooklyn will have to wait until next Wednesday to get back to competition as they will head out on the road to take on CUNYAC South Division foe York College at 6 pm.
