Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team defeated City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) and borough rival Medgar Evers College this evening at the West Quad Center in straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-13).
The win completes the season series sweep over the Cougars, as BC defeated Medgar Evers, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 27-25), back on February 28th.
Brooklyn improves to 7-12 overall on the season and 3-8 in the conference, while Medgar remains winless at 0-23 overall and 0-13 in league play.
The Bulldogs were led by senior
Keiran Halton, who racked up a match-high 13 kills, while hitting .611. Freshman
David Dimitruk also had an impressive hitting performance recording 11 kills, while hitting .733.
Senior
Gene Tom paced the offense with a match-best 37 assists, as the team hit .500 (42 kills/nine errors/66 total attacks) for the game. Sophomore
Timothy Hui, the current national leader in digs-per-set, registered 12 digs on the night. Classmate
Alexander Shlivko recorded three service aces.
For Medgar, Jason Brown led the way with six kills, while Lancedale Calderon dished out seven assists. Christian Rodriguez finished with seven digs.
In the first set, BC used an early 5-0 run after being down 2-1 to go up 6-2. The Bulldogs would use another 5-0 run midway through the set to take a 19-12 advantage, as Brooklyn would go on to take the set, 25-19. The Bulldogs were solid on offense in the set, hitting .440 (15 kills/4 erros/25 total attacks)
BC would lead from the opening serve until the final point in the second set, as the Bulldogs scored the first three points. Up by a slim 7-5 margin, Brooklyn would begin to pull away using a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-5. BC would not be challenged the rest of the way, as Brooklyn would go on to take the 25-14 victory. The BC offense was stellar once again, as the Bulldogs hit .529 (12 kills/3 errors/17 total attacks).
The third set saw the Cougars hold onto a slim 6-5 lead early on in the set; however, the Bulldogs would capitalize on another key 5-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. After Medgar cut its deficit to 11-8, Brooklyn would put the set and match away for good using a 9-0 run to go ahead 20-8. BC would eventually go on to win 25-13. Brooklyn continued its strong hitting performance to complete the sweep, as BC hit .542 (15 kills/2 errors/24 total attacks).
Brooklyn returns to action on Tuesday, March 27th, as the Bulldogs will play host to the Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY) in a key matchup for seeding purposes for the upcoming conference tournament, as both teams are currently tied for 5th place.
The match also marks the regular season home finale for the Bulldogs, who will honor their seniors prior to the start of the match as part of Senior Night.
