Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team snapped its two-match losing streak tonight with its straight sets victory over the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-14), in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup earlier tonight at the West Quad Center.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 5-10 overall on the season and 2-6 in the CUNYAC; while the Bloodhounds drop to 2-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
Brooklyn was led by senior
Duong Thai and sophomore
Alexander Shlivko, who posted nine kills apiece on the night. Shlivko hit a stellar .727 on the night. Junior
David Rafailov also had a strong hitting night posting a .636 hitting percentage, while racking up seven kills. Senior
Gene Tom helped pace the offense with 27 assists, while sophomore
Timothy Hui added 10 digs.
John Jay was led by the duo of Korede Griffith and Rashid Allah Morad, who registered five kills each. Griffith also chipped in with eight digs, while Dale Hoa contributed with 12 assists.
In the opening set, BC jumped out to an early 9-2 lead on the strength of the serving from junior
Edison Chow and freshman
David Dimitruk. The Bulldogs would cruise to its 25-10 win in the first set due in large part to its solid hitting performance with eight kills – one error - 16 total attacks (.438).
The second set featured much tighter action as both teams battled in the early going. Following a mini-rally that put the Bloodhounds up by a slim 5-4 advantage, the Bulldogs rattled off a 7-1 run to go up 11-6. John Jay would cut into its deficit and tie the game at 16-16, before BC struck for six straight points to go up 22-16, regaining control of the match for good. Brooklyn would eventually go on to take the set 25-20.
An early run in the third set that put up the Bulldogs 6-3 would go on to fuel another strong hitting performance for BC, which saw the home team hit .308 (13/5/26) in the set. Brooklyn would eventually take the third and final set, 25-14, to complete the sweep.
Brooklyn returns to the court this Saturday, March 10th, as the Bulldogs will play host to Sarah Lawrence College in a non-conference match. The start time is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
