New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team had its City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Volleyball Championships run ended in the semifinals round earlier today, as the #5 seeded Bulldogs fell to the top seed Hunter College Hawks in straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14), at the Hunter Sportsplex.
BC concludes its season with a 10-14 overall record, while Hunter advances to the championship final later tonight against the #2 seed Baruch College Bearcats, who defeated the #3 seed York College Cardinals in the other semifinals game.
Hunter is currently ranked 11th in the latest ACVA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll.
The Bulldogs were led by senior
Keiran Halton who tallied a match-high 10 kills en route to being named to the All-Tournament team, while classmate
Gene Tom paced the offense with 18 assists. Sophomore
Alexander Shlivko had a pair of service aces on the night, while classmate
Timothy Hui, the national leader in digs-per-set, finished with four digs.
The Hawks were led by Eric Barty's match-best 10 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, while Braien Otsla added seven kills. As a team, Hunter posted a solid .418 (38 kills/10 errors/67 total attacks) hitting percentage in the match. Stanley Martinez dished out a game-high 28 assists, while Eric Lodde registered seven digs.
Brooklyn opened the match scoring the first two points in the opening set and would take an early 4-1 advantage. The Bulldogs held onto a slim lead throughout the majority of the set until Hunter used a 5-0 run after being down 12-9 to go up 14-12. Hunter would never relinquish its lead from there on out, as the Hawks would go on to take a 25-18 win.
The second set saw Hunter take an early 4-1 lead and eventually take a 15-9 advantage. The Hawks would never allow the Bulldogs to get back into the set, as the home team would go on to take another 25-18 win to go up two sets to none.
The third set saw Hunter jump out to a 6-2 lead, as Brooklyn would never hold a lead. The Hawks would eventually take a 25-14 victory to take the set and the match to the advance to the championship final.
After helping guide Brooklyn to the semifinals round of the CUNYAC Men's Volleyball Championships, first year head coach
Michael Salak will look to build off a solid rookie season and compete once again for the top of the CUNYAC in 2013.
