Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Purchase in Home Opener

Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team defeated the Panthers of Purchase College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-14), in a non-conference matchup at the West Quad Center on Thursday evening. With the win, Brooklyn moves to 1-3 overall on the season; while Purchase drops to 0-2 overall on the year.

Prior to the start of the match junior Timothy Hui was recognized for his stellar 2012 season, which saw him finish the year ranked first in all of NCAA Division III in digs-per-set, with a 3.50 digs/set average. Hui was presented with his statistical champion plaque from the NCAA.

The night would belong to Hui, who racked up a match-high 15 kills hitting a solid .522, to go with seven assists and three digs. Sophomore David Dimitruk added 12 kills posting a strong .529 hitting percentage, while senior Christopher Valverde dished out a match-best 23 assists. Freshman Ricky Myint was solid defensively with 10 digs.

Brooklyn jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the first set led by the serving of Dimitruk and freshman Serhan Akturk. The Panthers would never recover from its deficit as the Bulldogs would cruise to a 25-15 first set victory.

The second set featured much of the same, as Brooklyn used a 5-0 run to start the set, behind the serving of Valverde. Purchase would battle back and cut its deficit to three, 9-6; however, BC would use a 10-3 run to go ahead 19-9. The Bulldogs would go on to take a 25-19 set win.

The third and final set was once again controlled by the home team, as Brooklyn never trailed. Up by just one, 6-5, the Bulldogs used an 11-3 run to take a commanding 17-8 lead, en route to their 25-14 set triumph to complete the straight sets victory.

The Panthers were led by Kevon Kareem Bruce's team-high seven kills and eight digs, while Alex Billen-Calhoun added nine assists. 

Brooklyn returns to action on Saturday, February 9th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Lehman College the Bronx, NY for a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) multi-match. BC will take on York College at 11:00 am and then square off against John Jay College of Criminal Justice at 3:00 pm.
