Brooklyn, NY --- In a matchup of unbeaten City University of New York Athletic Conference teams, the Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision against the Dolphins of Staten Island on Thursday afternoon at the Roosevelt Courts.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 8-1 overall on the season and 4-1 in the CUNYAC; while the Dolphins remain perfect in conference play at 6-0 and improve to 9-1 overall on the year.
The visiting Dolphins would take an early 2-1 advantage, by earning two wins during doubles play. The CSI tandem of Ilona Soyko and Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert outlasted the BC team of
Ekaterina Mospanova and
Rosalia Xue, 9-7, at #2 doubles; while the Staten Island duo of Madiha Mulla and Nozima Toshpulatova also took home a hard-fought 9-7 decision over
Maria Sanz and
Gianna Gelosi at #3 doubles.
The Bulldogs took a win at #1 doubles, as the pairing of
Yuliya Orkis and
Suraya Maenhout cruised past the team of Sophia Varriano and Jean Baak.
Coming off her strong showing at the 2013 USTA/ITA Division III Northeast Regionals, Orkis continued her solid play in singles, downing Varriano, 6-0, 6-1, at #1 singles.
That would be BC's lone win of the day in singles action, as the Dolphins took wins at #2, #3, #4, #5 and #6 singles, en route to their 7-2 win.
The match of the day came at #4 singles, as Baak edged out Sanz in a three-set super tiebreaker. Baak took the opening set, 6-3; however, Sanz would battle back to edge out a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set, to force the super tiebreaker. In the end, Baak would take the match 10-8.
“Obviously, we didn't want to lose tonight,” said Head Coach
Ahmad Odetalla. “We have to give credit to Staten Island's talented players. They earned this win, but I'm glad our players made them work for each and every point. I have complete confidence that we will regroup and get back on track as we start the home stretch.”
Brooklyn will be back in action next Thursday, October 10th, as the Bulldogs will travel to the Bronx, NY to take on the Lightning of Lehman College in another CUNYAC contest. The match is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start time.
