Women’s Soccer Takes on CSI in CUNYAC Final

Brooklyn, NY --- In just its second season of existence, the Brooklyn College Bulldogs will take on the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in the championship final of the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNAYC)/Applebee's Women's Soccer Championships on Saturday, November 9th. The game is scheduled for 2:00 pm at BC Field.

BC has had a remarkable year in its sophomore season, which has seen the Bulldogs post a 14-3 overall record, an eight-win improvement from last season's inaugural 6-7-1 campaign. Two of Brooklyn's three losses this season have come in double-overtime.

Staten Island defeated Brooklyn in both of their meetings during the regular season, as the Dolphins scored three second half goals in a 3-1 come-from-behind-win on September 24th in Staten Island; and later a 3-2 double-overtime victory on October 26th in Brooklyn.

Saturday's third installment should be another exciting matchup, as the winner will earn the CUNYAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Powering the Brooklyn offense this season has been the play of freshman forward Jordan Kerwin, who leads the team in both goals (17) and points (40), to go along with six assists. Senior midfielder Shani Abrahams, last season's CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, was once again solid for BC, totaling 14 goals and a team-best 10 assists for 38 points. All three are career-high totals for Abrahams. Abrahams also led the team with five game-winning goals.

Junior transfer forward Bergelie Louis made an immediate impact in her first season with the Bulldogs, registering 13 goals and an assist for 27 points. Sophomore midfielder Sayla Flores has also been vital to the offense recording nine goals, to go along with eight assists for 26 points.

Sophomore midfielders Shani Nakhid-Schuster and Stefany Ibarra have both been vital members to the Brooklyn offense that has racked up 59 goals and 37 assists for 155 points.

On the defensive side of the ball, freshman Jasmine Fermin has anchored a stout Bulldogs defense that has totaled 11 shutouts on the year. Along with Fermin, Janet Rodriguez, Leslie Gomez and Meagan Cranston have formed a strong defensive unit.

Benefiting the most from the defense has been freshman goalkeeper Kimberly Chacko, who owns a 0.86 goals-against-average and a .786 save percentage.

Leading the Dolphins are a pair of scoring machines in Demi-Jean Martorano (24 goals, five assists, 53 points) and Samantha Wysokowski (22 goals, seven assists, 51 points). Melissa Gelardi has also been a key cog to the CSI offense, totaling 21 assists.

The dynamic Dolphins offense, which is ranked eighth in all of NCAA Division III in scoring, has totaled 78 goals and 68 assists for 224 points.

In net for Staten Island is Victoria Donegan, who has allowed just 11 goals in over 1,594 minutes in goal, to go along with 66 saves for a .857 save percentage.
