Box Score 2 Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team split its tri-match on Saturday, defeating borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) in straight sets, 3-0, (25-11, 25-12, 25-15), before falling to Albertus Magnus College in a five-set thriller, 3-2, (22-25, 25-16, 26-24, 23-25, 16-14).
BC now moves its record to 3-5 overall on the season.
Coming against the Bears of St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), the Bulldogs never trailed in any of the three sets, as freshman
Dukhyun Ko recorded a match-high eight kills, to go with eight digs, while seniors
Mateusz Gotowicki and
Edison Chow and sophomore
David Dimitruk all finished the match with six kills each. Junior
Timothy Hui and senior
Christopher Valverde helped pace the offense dishing out 20 and 14 assists, respectively. Freshmen
Ricky Myint and
Serhan Akturk were solid defensively registering 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
For St. Joe's, Raul Urshela led the team with four kills, while Iqbal Husain handed out 10 assists. Martin Torres had eight digs in the match.
Brooklyn's second match featured a seesaw battle against Albertus Magnus. After the Bulldogs took the opening set, 25-22, the Falcons bounced back to take the second and third sets, 25-16 and 26-24, respectively. BC would not go down lightly, winning the fourth set, 25-23, to force a fifth and decisive set. In the end, Albertus Magnus would battle back to take a hard-fought, 16-14; win in the fifth and final set, to earn the 3-2 match victory.
Overall, there were 29 ties and 18 lead changes combined during the five sets.
Dimitruk led BC with 16 kills, to go with eight digs, while Ko finished with a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Hui also had a double-double with 26 assists and 17 digs, to go with eight kills, while Valverde chipped in with 19 assists. Myint contributed with 16 digs. Gotowicki and senior
Vsevolod Tsyupa both had four block assists.
For the Falcons, Glenn Johnson finished with 21 kills and 12 digs, while Chase Brinton had 13 kills and seven digs. Carlos Torres dished out 41 assists, to go with 10 digs, and Douglas DeSousa added 11 digs and eight kills. Mike Clark chipped in with 20 digs.
Brooklyn will be back in action this Tuesday, February 26th, as the Bulldogs will welcome the Hawks of Hunter College to the West Quad Center for a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start time.
