Men’s Volleyball Tops John Jay on Senior Night

Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team continued its solid play in the City University of New Athletic Conference (CUNYAC), as the Bulldogs bested the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in four sets, 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 25-18, 27-25), on Tuesday evening at the West Quad Center.

With the win, BC improves to 9-8 overall on the season, and more importantly moves to 5-3 in CUNYAC play, as the Bulldogs remain in the hunt for a top four seed and the right to host in the quarterfinal round of the upcoming conference championships, which are set to begin on Tuesday, April 9th.

John Jay drops to 4-8 overall on the year and 1-7 in the conference.

Prior to the start of the match, seniors Christopher Valverde, Edison Chow and Mateusz Gotowicki were all honored as part of Senior Night celebrations, for all of their hard work and dedication to the BC Men's Volleyball program.

Trailing 9-6 in the first set, the Bulldogs took control of the match using an 8-0 run to take a commanding 14-9 lead. Gotowicki's serving helped fuel the run, as Brooklyn would never trail in the set again, en route to its 25-19 win to go ahead 1-0.

The Bloodhounds would even the match at 1-1, by taking a 25-18 win in the second set. John Jay took control of the set from the opening serve, scoring the first four points of the set. The Bulldogs would fight back as the teams battled back and forth, as they combined for six ties and four lead changes in the set, but in the end, John Jay would come out on top.

The third set featured much of the same, with eight ties and four lead changes; however, it would be the home Bulldogs that would take a 25-18 win of their own, to go up 2-1. With BC holding on to a slim 19-17 lead late in the set, Brooklyn would use a 5-0 run to help put enough separation between themselves and John Jay and eventually take the win.

The fourth and final set featured the most tightly contested set, as the teams combined for 13 ties and five lead changes, in yet another seesaw battle. With the Bloodhounds leading 25-24 and needing just one more point to close out the set and force a decisive fifth set, the Bulldogs rallied to score the final three points of the set, capped off by a kill from junior Timothy Hui, to take a hard-fought 27-25 set win and match victory,

John Jay had match-point on two occasions in the set, but would be unable to close out the resilient BC team on their senior night.

Leading the way for Brooklyn was sophomore David Dimitruk, who racked up 15 kills and 21 digs, both match-highs, to record a double-double. Hui finished with nine kills, four service aces and a match-best 24 assists, to go along with 10 digs, to also register a double-double, while freshman Serhan Akturk chipped in with a double-double of his own, his first career double-double, with 13 kills and 13 digs, both career-highs.

Valverde added 20 assists, while Gotowicki contributed with six kills and two service aces.

John Jay was led by Frankie Galang and Jack Palleschi, who both totaled seven kills each. Palleschi also added 12 digs. Nicholas Anderson dished out 20 assists, while Yevgeniy Remennik chipped in with a team-best 13 digs.

Up next for Brooklyn is a matchup against the top team in the CUNYAC, as the Bulldogs will take on the Bearcats of Baruch College (17-4 overall/8-0 CUNYAC) this Thursday, March 21st. Baruch is currently ranked eighth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start time at ARC Arena on the campus of Baruch.
