Men's Volleyball Downs CCNY in Five-Sets in CUNYAC Multi-Match Opener; Falls to #10 Baruch

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Brooklyn, NY --- In the first match of the day for the Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Multi-Match at the West Quad Center, the Bulldogs were victorious in a thrilling come-from-behind five-set match, 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 24-26, 25-21, 15-12), against the Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY). Brooklyn would later fall to the #10 nationally ranked Baruch College Bearcats in straight sets, 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-16).

With the split, Brooklyn moves to 5-8 overall on the season and 3-3 in the CUNYAC.

After Brooklyn took the opening set 25-22, the Beavers fought back to take the second and third sets by scores of 25-19 and 26-24, respectively, to go ahead 2-1. From there, BC battled back to take the fourth set, 25-21, forcing the decisive fifth set.

In the final set, the Bulldogs trailed 12-10; however, after head coach Michael Salak called a timeout, Brooklyn scored the final five points of the set, led by the serving of senior Christopher Valverde, to take the 15-12 set and match win.

In total, the match featured 42 ties and 13 lead changes.

Sophomore David Dimitruk totaled a match-high 18 kills, while junior Timothy Hui recorded a triple-double, with 16 kills, 29 assists and 16 digs. Freshman Dukhyun Ko added 12 digs, while Valverde helped pace the offense along with Hui contributing with 23 assists. Freshman Michael Boodram was a key force in the middle for BC, totaling four solo blocks and two block assists, while senior Vsevolod Tsyupa chipped in with eight kills, a career-high.

Against the Bearcats, the Bulldogs were once again led by Dimitruk, who tallied a team-high nine kills, to go with seven digs, three service aces and two block assists. Hui paced the offense with 12 assists, six digs and four kills, while senior Mateusz Gotowicki finished the match with four kills and a solo block.

The match featured eight ties and five lead changes; however, Baruch's solid hitting lead to their straight sets win, as the Bearcats hit .313 (37 kills/11 errors/83 total attacks) for the match.

Brooklyn returns to action this Wednesday, March 6th, as the Bulldogs will host the Lightning of Lehman College in a CUNYAC matchup. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 pm at the West Quad Center. BC defeated Lehman in five sets, 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 23-25, 15-13), in their first meeting back on February 13th. The Bulldogs will look to complete the season series sweep.
