Men’s Volleyball Prepares for CUNYAC Championships

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team, the #4 seed in the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Volleyball Championships, will begin its quest for a conference championship tomorrow night, Tuesday, April 9th, as the Bulldogs will host the #5 seeded Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY). The match is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the West Quad Center.

BC finished the 2013 regular season with a 12-11 overall record and a 8-6 mark in CUNYAC play, to secure the #4 seed; while CCNY finished the year with a 13-14 overall record and a 6-8 mark in the conference to earn the #5 seed.

The Bulldogs and Beavers are no strangers, as the teams met three times during the regular season, with Brooklyn winning two of the three matches.

In their first meeting, on January 26th, a non-conference meeting as part of the New Jersey City University (NJCU) quad match, CCNY cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-22) victory.

Later on in the season, coming in their first CUNYAC matchup, on March 2nd, BC defended its home court with a hard fought, 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 24-26, 25-21, 15-12) win.

The Bulldogs would sweep the conference home and home season series, with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) win on the Beavers home court on April 2nd. The win locked up the #4 seed for Brooklyn.

Leading the way for Brooklyn this season has been sophomore David Dimitruk, who has tallied a team-best 217 kills (3.19 k/set) on the year, to go along with 147 digs (2.16 d/set). Junior Timothy Hui has been solid racking up a team-leading 360 assists (4.74 a/set), to go with 151 kills (1.99 k/set) and 156 digs (2.05 d/set).

Freshman Ricky Myint has made an immediate impact registering a team-high 191 digs (2.55 d/set), while senior Christopher Valverde has chipped in with 3.95 assists-per-set and a team-best 23 service aces. Senior Mateusz Gotowicki is third on the team in kills (1.21 k/set) and leads the team in total blocks with 46.

For the Beavers, Brian Yik Lim leads the team with 267 kills (3.14 k/set), while Rubin Taipi (178 kills) and Jose Castillo (109 kills) rank second and third, respectively.  Taipi leads the team in service aces with 57, while Bryan Hu and Anthony Reyes are tied for the team lead in assists, with 306 each. Bobby Xihe Xie leads the team in digs with 201. Derell Williams' 35 total blocks on the season is best on the team.

The winner between Brooklyn and CCNY will advance to the semifinals on Friday, April 12th, which will be held at Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of CCNY. The BC/CCNY winner will take on the winner between top seed Baruch College and #8 seed Medgar Evers College at 6:00 pm. The championship final is also set for April 12th with an 8:00 pm start time.

The winner of the championship will earn the CUNYAC's automatic berth to the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship.
