Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Soccer Team won their third straight game to open the season on Wednesday evening, defeating borough rival St. Joseph's College 6-0 at Brooklyn College Field. The Bulldogs improve to 3-0 in 2013 while St. Joe's falls to 0-3.
Brooklyn got on the board early as Sayla Flores took a cross from Shani Abrahams and found the back of the net just four minutes into play.
Only two minutes later, Shani Nakhid-Shuster took a feed from Janet Rodriguez, scoring BC's second goal on an impressive kick that lofted the ball over the keeper's outstretched hand from about 20 yards out. The goal was her first of the season.
Nakhid-Shuster followed with another impressive score, jumping high in the air to touch a Meagan Cranston cross pass the goalkeeper for the team's third score of the half and her second on the young season.
Sangam Gurung finished off the first-half onslaught for the Bulldogs, scoring an unassisted goal, the first of her college career.
In the second half, reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Jordan Kerwin got in the action, taking a Flores assist to give BC a 5-0 advantage in the 53rd minute. The score was Kerwin's 4th of the season which leads the team.
Bergelie Louis, who entered the contest with two goals on the year, struck next for Brooklyn, scoring in the 77th minute for the Bulldogs' sixth and final score on the evening.
"The challenge today was to see how good we really can be," said head coach Patrick Horne. "We were able to work on the little things to get it right. Our reserves were also able to get a lot of minutes, which will benefit us going forward."
In their three wins, Brooklyn has been dominant, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 15-0. The competition will get tougher as league play approaches.
The Bulldogs have non-conference home games on Friday (Washington Adventist) and Monday (NYU-Poly) before a stretch of three vital CUNYAC games against York, Lehman and Staten Island.
Friday's contest against WAU will be played at 2 pm as a part of a soccer doubleheader as the men's team will take on NYU-Poly at 4 pm.
