Men’s Volleyball Opens Season at Roadrunner Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Mahwah, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team began its 2014 campaign on Saturday afternoon at the Ramapo College Roadrunner Invitational at the Bradley Center. The Bulldogs opened the invitational going up against a pair of Preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Top-15 teams, falling to #4 SUNY New Paltz in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-12) and  #11 Stevenson University in straight sets, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-22).

BC falls to 0-2 to start the season, while New Paltz opens its season at 1-0 and Stevenson improves to 3-0.

In the season opener against New Paltz, sophomore transfer Antony Koyfman led the Bulldogs with five kills in his BC debut. Junior Lucas Moline added four kills, while sophomore Hoyin Ki paced the offense with nine assists. Senior Timothy Hui recorded seven digs.

For New Paltz, John Lutjen led the way with eight kills hitting .727, to go along with 15 assists. Christian Smith dished out 18 assists to go with five kills, while Brian Smith finished with six kills. As a team, the Hawks finished the match with 41 kills, while hitting .486.

In the second game of the day for Brooklyn against Stevenson, the Bulldogs were once again led by Koyfman, who tallied seven kills.  Hui added six kills, seven assists and seven digs, while junior David Dimitruk chipped in with five kills. Ki paced the offense with 11 assists.

Stevenson's Nathan Ellis led the Mustangs with six kills, while Robert Wright dished out 14 assists. The team totaled 24 kills in the match, to go along with 12 total blocks.

"Today was a tough start to our season," said head coach Michael Salak. "We played two solid teams and I was happy with the attitude that our guys played with. Even though we were outmanned a bit, our guys played with confidence and kept working hard."

Brooklyn will conclude the Roadrunner Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, January 26th, as the Bulldogs will take on host Ramapo at 10:00 am and the City College of New York at noon.
