Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- In the Bulldogs' final non-conference game of the season, the Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team defeated the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College (NY) by a score of 67-57 on Monday evening at the West Quad Center.
With the win, Brooklyn improves to 13-5 overall on the season and will now focus on its remaining City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) schedule, as BC will look to lock up home court advantage for the quarterfinals round of the Women's Basketball championships that begin on Sunday, February 23rd.
The Knights drop to 2-14 overall on the year.
Both offenses struggled to get going in the first half, as Brooklyn shot 25.6% (10-for-39) from the field, including going 1-for-13 (7.7%) from beyond the arc. Mt. St. Mary (NY) shot 22.9% (8-for-35) in the half, including going 1-of-8 (12.5%) from deep.
The opening period saw tight, see-saw action, as the teams combined for six ties and three lead changes. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early seven-point lead, 11-4, at the 15:43 mark of the half; however, the Knights would eventually go on to take the largest lead of the period at 23-15 with 4:08 remaining before the halftime break.
The visitors would be unable to hold onto its lead, as Brooklyn would claw back into the game to eventually take a 29-26 halftime edge into the locker room.
BC would hold onto its lead throughout the second half, eventually building a double-digit cushion by as many as 11 on a number of occasions. The Knights would not go down lightly; however, as the visitors would get to within one, 49-48, with 5:46 left in the game. The Bulldogs would answer with buckets from juniors
Nicole Francomano and
Asia Foster to keep the Knights at arm's length as BC would eventually build its lead back up to double digits by hitting key free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
The Bulldogs had four starters in double figures led by senior
Megan Campbell, who scored a team-high 15 points, to go with a game and season-high 17 rebounds, to register her fifth double-double of the season. Junior
Sarah Shanderson added 13 points, going 3-for-5 from three, while classmate
Carissa Williams chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds. Francomano finished the night with 10 points, while dishing out a game-best eight assists. Foster grabbed 10 rebounds to help Brooklyn win the battle of the glass, 62-40.
The Knights' Rachel Perrone recorded a double-double with a game leading 20 points, to go with 14 rebounds, while Jessica Perrone added 13 points.
For the game, Brooklyn shot just 26.8% (19-71) from the field and 15.4% (4-26) from three. The Bulldogs took full advantage of the free throw line shooting 83.3% (25-30) from the stripe.
Mt. St. Mary (NY) shot 29.5% (18-61) from the field and 14.3% (2-14) from beyond the arc. The Knights converted 79.2% (19-24) from the line.
Brooklyn will next take on borough and conference foe Medgar Evers College on Wednesday, January 29th. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm tip at the Cougars Cave on the campus of Medgar Evers. If you can't make it out to the game,
