Women’s Soccer Falls to #2 Messiah in First Round of NCAA Tournament

Box Score Grantham, PA --- The Brooklyn College Bulldogs fell to #2 nationally ranked Messiah College, 5-0, in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships on Saturday at Shoemaker Field.

The Bulldogs end their season with a 10-9-1 overall record, while the Falcons improve to 20-0-2 overall on the year and advance to the second round tomorrow, Sunday, November 16th. Messiah will square off against Capital University at 5:00 pm at Shoemaker Field. Capital defeated Gettysburg College 5-4 in penalty kicks to advance to the second round after playing to a scoreless tie.

The Falcons got on the board early in the third minute of the game, as Messiah benefited from a BC defensive miscue, as a Brooklyn defender hit the ball into goal attempting to clear the ball, which led to an own goal.

The game would remain 1-0 until the 32nd minute, when the home team once again capitalized on a Brooklyn miscue, as the Falcons were awarded a penalty kick following a handball penalty in the box. Messiah's Nikki Elsaesser would convert on the penalty kick opportunity for her 21st score of the season to put the Falcons ahead 2-0,

Erin Sollenberger would cap the first half scoring for the Falcons with her sixth and seventh goals of the year, as she notched an unassisted goal in the 36th minute after stealing the ball from a Bulldogs' defender and another in the 45th minute with Missy Biener assisting on the score.

The Falcons would add their fifth and final score in the second half in the 53 minute, as Biener took a cross from Holly Burgard to score her second goal of the year.

Brooklyn's Rebecca Harmata played all 90 minutes in goal and totaled seven saves. Audra Larson played the first 70:09 of the game, while Sara Yunez finished the game logging in the final 19:51 of the game.

"We are a young team that is still not confident playing in the NCAA Tournament," said head coach Patrick Horne. "We were very unsettlted at the start of the game, gave up four easy goals early and couldn't recover."

The Bulldogs will look to make it three-straight City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) championships and NCAA Tournament appearances next season, as coach Horne is expected to return 17 of his 18 players from this season next year. BC's lone loss will be a major one; however, as senior Bergelie Louis will be lost to graduation.
