Men’s Volleyball Edges Lehman in Five Set Thriller in 2014 Home Opener

Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- In its 2014 home opener on Wednesday evening, the Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team defeated the Lightning of Lehman College in thrilling fashion, as the Bulldogs struck down the Lightning in five sets, 3-2 (25-15, 25-27, 25-16, 25-27, 15-13), in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action.

With the win, BC improves to 6-4 overall on the season and 2-1 in the CUNYAC; while Lehman falls to 4-2 overall on the year and 1-2 in conference play.

Leading the way for Brooklyn was junior David Dimitruk, who tallied a match-best 17 kills, to go along with a team-high 14 digs, to record a double-double. Classmate Mihail Osipov also finished the night with a double-double totaling 15 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Antony Koyfman added 14 kills hitting .375, to along with four total blocks, while senior Timothy Hui paced the offense with 48 assists.

For Lehman, Miguel Gallardo led the Lightning with a team-best 14 kills, to go along with a match-high 20 digs, to register a double-double. Jaleel Lino added 12 kills, while Aldo Pllumbaj chipped in with 11 digs. Roberto Perez dished out 34 assists.

The teams combined for 29 ties and 10 lead changes throughout the five sets. BC took the opening set with relative ease, 25-15, while Lehman bounced back to earn a hard fought 27-25 win in the second set to even the match at 1-1. The second set saw 11 ties and four lead changes.

The Bulldogs would go up 2-1 after taking a 25-16 win in the third set; however, the Lightning would not go down without a fight, as Lehman forced a decisive fifth set gutting out another hard fought, 27-25 win in the fourth set.

In the final set, Brooklyn jumped out to an 8-5 lead, but Lehman once again fought back to take the slim lead, 9-8. With the match tied at 10-10, the Bulldogs outscored the Lightning 5-3 to close out the match and come away with the 15-13 win to take the match 3-2.

Aiding the BC win was the Bulldogs' offense that racked up 64 kills on the night. However, Brooklyn's serving struggles helped keep Lehman in the match, as BC totaled 27 service errors.

Brooklyn will return to action tomorrow, Thursday, February 13th, as the Bulldogs will welcome Fontbonne University to the West Quad Center. The non-conference match is scheduled for a 5:00 pm start time.
