Men’s Volleyball Falls to #11 Baruch in Four

Box Score New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team fell to #11 nationally ranked Baruch College in four sets, 3-1 (26-24, 25-15, 25-27, 25-17), on Thursday evening in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action at the ARC Arena on the campus of Baruch.

Brooklyn drops to 12-11 overall on the season and 6-5 in the CUNYAC, while Baruch, currently ranked 11th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, remains perfect in conference play at 11-0 and improves to 20-7 overall on the year.

The win also gives Baruch the regular season sweep over Brooklyn, as the Bearcats defeated the Bulldogs in five-sets, 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 15-7), back on March 8th on a neutral court at John Jay College.

"Once again our guys battled," said head coach Michael Salak. "The character of our team is really starting to show. We don't back down from a fight. We made Baruch earn it tonight."

The first set saw nine ties and four lead changes, as both teams battled back and forth. With the Bulldogs trailing 22-15 late in the set, Brooklyn answered with a furious rally scoring seven straight points behind the serving of junior David Dimitruk to tie the set at 22 all. The teams would trade points down the stretch, until the Bearcats edged out a 26-24 win to take a 1-0 lead.

Utilizing its momentum from its opening set win, Baruch took full control of the second set rattling off the first six points of the set. The Bearcats would never trail in the second set en route to its 25-15 win to go ahead 2-0.

The third set saw another tight affair, as the teams combined for 11 ties and one lead change. The Bulldogs would avoid a straight sets loss, as Brooklyn fought off Baruch to squeak out a 27-25 win to force a fourth set.

The fourth and final set saw nine ties and three lead changes, as Baruch would go on to close out the match with a 25-17 win to take home the 3-1 victory. After Brooklyn, tied the set at 16 all, the Bearcats rattled off six straight points to take a commanding 22-16 advantage to eventually hold off the resilient Bulldogs.

Brooklyn junior Mihail Osipov posted a match-high 17 kills (.375), to go with five digs and three block assists, while Dimitruk finished with nine kills, nine digs and five service aces. Sophomore Antony Koyfman added eight kills, to go along with five total blocks (two solo). Junior Vaughn Ford had a strong hitting night with six kills (.400), to go with three block assists. Senior Timothy Hui paced the offense with 36 assists.

As a team, the Bulldogs racked up 45 kills, to go with seven aces and eight team blocks. However, Brooklyn also committed 27 attack errors and 18 service errors.

Baruch's Chris Kaimis totaled 16 kills (.379) and nine digs, while Jack McKee added eight kills, four aces and five total blocks (two solo). Yanni Malo chipped in with seven kills, three aces and six block assists. Scott Standring dished out 38 assists, while Man Wai Choi contributed with 11 digs.

As a team, Baruch hit .276 (44 kills / 17 errors / 98 total attacks), to go with 10 aces and 12 team blocks.

Brooklyn will be back in action this Tuesday, March 25th, as the Bulldogs will be on the road to take on borough foe St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). The match is scheduled for a 7:30 pm start time.
