Box Score Bronx, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team began the month of March on a high note, defeating the Lightning of Lehman College in four sets, 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15), in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action on Wednesday evening at the APEX on the campus of Lehman.
With the win, BC evens its overall record to 8-8 on the year and improves to 4-2 in the CUNYAC. Lehman drops to 5-10 overall on the season and 1-5 in conference play.
The win also gives Brooklyn the season sweep over Lehman, as the Bulldogs defeated the Lightning in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (25-15, 25-27, 25-16, 25-27, 15-13), back on February 12th at the West Quad Center.
Junior
Mihail Osipov led the Bulldogs with 15 kills and nine digs, while classmate
David Dimitruk added 11 kills and 10 digs to register a double-double. Sophomore
Antony Koyfman finished the nigh with nine kills, while hitting an efficient .533. Junior
Vaughn Ford also had an efficient hitting performance, hitting .467 with seven kills. Senior
Timothy Hui dished out 35 assists, while sophomore
Ricky Myint was solid defensively chipping in with 13 digs.
For Lehman, Miguel Gallardo recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 19 digs, while Roberto Perez paced the offense with 22 assists.
In the first set with the game tied at 3-3 early on, the Bulldogs used an 8-1 run to go up 11-4. Brooklyn would command the set the rest of the way to take a 25-15 opening set win to go up 1-0.
Lehman would come out determined in the second set, as the Lightning struck with a 7-1 run to take control of the set. The Bulldogs would fight back and tie the set at 10 all; however, the Lehman would use a 7-3 run to go up 17-13. The Lightning would eventually take a hard fought 25-21 win to tie the match at 1-1.
The third set saw the most back-and-forth action, as the teams combined for six ties and two lead changes. With the set even at 14-14, Brooklyn used a 9-2 run to go up 23-17. The Bulldogs would eventually go on to take the 25-20 win to go up 2-1 in the match.
Needing just one more win, the Bulldogs used a 10-2 run in the middle of the set to take a commanding 17-8 advantage. Brooklyn would go on to cruise to the 25-15 win to take the match, 3-1.
"Overall, tonight was a great success," said head coach
Michael Salak. "Our guys controlled the match for the most part. We slipped up in the second set, but our guys showed maturity and bounced back pretty quickly."
Brooklyn will return to action this Saturday, March 8th, as the Bulldogs will take part in the second CUNYAC multi-match of the season. BC will begin the day against #13 nationally ranked Baruch College at 9:00 am and finish the day against City College of New York (CCNY) at 11:00 am. John Jay College of Criminal Justice will serve as host of the multi-match.
