Men’s Volleyball Falls to Top Seed Baruch in CUNYAC Semifinals

Box Score New York, NY --- The #4 seeded Brooklyn College Bulldogs fell to the #1 seeded Baruch College Bearcats in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-16), on Friday evening at Baruch's ARC Arena in the semifinals round of the 2014 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Pepsi Men's Volleyball Championships.

Brooklyn ends its season with a 16-15 overall record, while Baruch moves to 26-10 overall and advances to the championship final for the 10th straight season. The 16 wins in 2014 for Brooklyn are the most wins in a single season since 2007, when BC posted a 16-8 overall record.

Junior Mihail Osipov, the 2014 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, led the Bulldogs with a match-high 11 kills, to go along with seven digs. Senior Timothy Hui paced the offense with 20 assists, to go along with five service aces and eight digs. Sophomore Antony Koyfman chipped in with six kills and two block assists, while junior David Dimitruk added four kills.

Baruch was led Chris Kaimis, who led the Bearcats with eight kills, five digs and three block assists. Brady Ambro finished with seven kills, while Jack McKee (five kills, five digs) and Yanni Malo (five kills, five digs, four block assists). Scott Standring dished out 22 assists, while Aviv Elias finished with eight digs. As a team, the Bearcats hit .224 (28 kills/13 errors/67 total attacks).

The first set saw three ties and one lead change, as Baruch kept Brooklyn at arm's length. Following a kill from Dimitruk that tied the game at 5-5 in the early stages, the Bearcats rattled off four straight points to go up 9-5. The Bulldogs would chip away at their deficit the rest of the way, eventually getting back to within one, 23-22; however, Bearcats would close out the set scoring the final two points to take the 25-22 win. Baruch hit a solid .318 (10 kills/3 errors/22 total attacks) in the set.

The second set saw the most back-and-forth action with seven ties and five lead changes. Trailing 8-5, the Bulldogs scored five straight points to go up 10-8. The momentum would not last long, as Baruch answered with three straight scores to retake the lead 11-10. Brooklyn would again take a slim lead, 14-13, but the Bearcats again scored three straight to go up 16-14, as the top seed would never trail again, as Baruch would go on to take a 25-20 win.

The beginning of the third set once again saw tight play, as the teams combined for five ties and two lead changes. With the set tied at 6-6, Baruch used a 7-2 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Bearcats lead would never be threatened again, as Baruch would go on to take a 25-16 win to complete the straight sets win and advance to the final.
