Box Score Brooklyn, NY---Hustle plays down the stretch aided the Bulldogs to their first win of the season over Purchase College, 67-64. Brooklyn improves to 1-1 overall on the season with the home opening win. Purchase dropped their season opener tonight. BC will travel to Arlington, VA for the Marymount University Tip-off Tournament starting on Friday night. The Bulldogs will open the tourney against host, Marymount, in the night cap at 7:30 PM.
Dragging at times with unforced turnovers and fouls, the game certainly picked up momentum down the stretch.
With the scored tied 63-63 with 2:32 left to play, junior guard
Twanda Holder stepped to the free throw line and knocked down both shots, giving the Bulldogs a two-point advantage that they wouldn't relinquish. Purchase would miss their second free throw attempt that would have tied the game with just under a minute to play.
The Panthers would have a chance to take the lead after a Bulldog turnover with 18 seconds left to play. However, senior guard
Ryan Reeder stole the ball, which eventually led to a
Taylor Gallagher free throw make on her first attempt giving the Bulldogs a 66-64 advantage with:09 to play. She would go on to miss her second attempt, but Reeder was in the right place at the right time once again for the offensive rebound. Reeder would be fouled immediately and hit one two free throws giving the Bulldogs a three-point advantage with just under nine seconds to go.
Speaking on the overall outcome of the game, Head Coach
Alex Lang said with relief, "Definitely an exciting one for the home opener. Sloppy at times, but our team showed some courage to pull it out at the end. We got some good production off of the bench, which played a huge factor in the win. Ryan, Justine and Alex played big roles for us tonight. I'm very proud of our team for pulling this one out."
The Panthers got a shot off, which fell short as time expired.
Despite a slow start, the Bulldogs led 18-13 to end the opening quarter. They would hold on to 32-31 lead to end the first half.
BC trailed by as many as seven points in the first three minutes of the final period. They tied the game at 59 with a 7-0 run capped by a three-point make by Reeder.
Junior guard
Justine Vento led the Bulldogs with 14 points including 4-7 from long range. Reeder finished the game with eight points on 3-4 from the floor and two very important offensive rebounds.
